Brief relief, long-term questions on student loans

Congress may have averted a doubling of interest rates on millions of new federal student loans, but the fix is only for a year, leaving students on edge over whether they'll face a similar increase next summer.

"It's scary," said Faith Nebergall, a student at Indiana University whose loans currently total upward of $20,000. "And it's unfair to kind of be kept in the dark as to how much money we owe."

Under the agreement, interest rates on new subsidized Stafford loans will remain at 3.4 percent. That's estimated to save 7.4 million students about $1,000 each on the average loan, which is usually paid off over 10 or more years.

In the short run, that means students can breathe a sigh of relief this summer. A year from now, however, those rates are set to rise to 6.8 percent. That automatic increase was approved by Congress when lawmakers signed off on a series of scheduled rate reductions five years ago.

"There are more struggling families and they need some assurances to feel OK about getting young people into and through college," said Kati Haycock, president of The Education Trust. "Congress aggravates everybody, creates lots of anxiety out there, and essentially gives us a one-year solution."

About $1.2 billion will be saved by limiting federal subsidies of Stafford loans to six years for students pursuing a bachelor's degree and three years for those completing an associate's degree.

Richard Vedder, director of the Center for College Affordability and Productivity and an economics professor at Ohio University, said that could have the positive effect of encouraging more students to complete their degree in a timely manner, while also allowing some flexibility for students who work and have families and need more time to finish.

But he sees a negative impact down the road. Vedder argues that lower interest rates contribute to the desire to borrow money, which he says has the adverse effect of enabling schools to raise their tuition. Some students with poor academic records and for whom college might not be the best fight might be inclined to enroll anyway. That could aggravate problems in the labor market, where there are many unemployed and underemployed recent college graduates.

"It makes political sense, but not economic sense," Vedder said.

The price of college tuition has skyrocketed in recent decades. Between 1982 and 2007, tuition and fees increased 439 percent while the median family income rose 147 percent, according to a report from the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education. The price of in-state tuition at a public university has increased by more than 5 percent annually in the past 10 years. It jumped 15 percent between 2008 and 2010 alone.

Cuts to state education budgets have played a significant role in increasing those costs, particularly in recent years. How much influence the expansion of access to federal aid has played is less certain; many insist it plays none. An analysis this year by the American Council on Education concluded there is no evidence to suggest it has, and that any relationship between the two is incidental, not causal.

What is certain is that with the price of tuition continuing to rise, pressure will remain on Congress to keep rates low.

"I think anybody in higher education, whether it's people like me, college presidents, financial aid administrators, students and parents, would really like some certainty and predictability," said Terri Hartle, senior vice president for government and public affairs with the American Council on Education. "And that's something we really haven't had."

Nebergall, 21, said she expects to owe $20,000 or more on her federal loans by the time she graduates, and about the same in private loans as well. While she and her long-term boyfriend would like to move in together when she finishes school, Nebergall doesn't think they'll be able to afford it. He pays about $250 a month in student loans himself.

She said a rate increase next year could have a big effect.

"It's money I could put down on a security deposit on my own apartment," she said. "It's money I could be used to start my adult life."

Wildfires spewing pollution across US

Besides torching forests and houses, wildfires throughout the United States are also releasing a lot of smoke and particulate matter into the air. ?

A map created using data from a NASA satellite shows the location and amount of pollution wildfires raging across the West have spewed into the skies above the United States. ?

The new map shows relative levels of tiny particles called aerosols, which have an important impact on weather and climate and are unsafe to breathe at certain concentrations. It was created by information gathered by the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership satellite on June 26.

The highest concentrations of aerosols appear reddish-brown, while the lowest are light yellow. Heavy concentrations of smoke and aerosols are visible to the northeast of the North Schell, Dump and Wood Hollow fires in Nevada and Utah. Thick smoke plumes from wildfires across Colorado have moved east and south into the plains states. Further south in Texas and New Mexico the map shows particulates from fires there, like the Whitewater-Baldy Complex fire, the largest in New Mexico's history.

The instrument on the satellite that measures aerosols, the Ozone Mapper Profiler Suite, works by analyzing the amount of light scattered and reflected by the atmosphere; smoke and dust reflect much more radiation than clear skies.?

Researchers who've analyzed the data used to make the map said that the western wildfires have affected air quality as far away as the East Coast. ?

Warning over new 'dash for gas'

The government needs to multiply investment in clean energy four-fold to avoid breaking laws on renewables and climate change, official advisers say.

This would raise the annual energy bill of a "typical household" by ?100 by 2020, says the Committee on Climate Change (CCC).

But it says that is a cheaper option than a new "dash for gas".

It says the potential advent of a shale gas boom in Europe is not a "game-changer" for energy policy in the UK.

The committee's annual report to Parliament confirms that greenhouse gases fell in the UK by 7% in 2011, but says most of this was down to the warm winter, rising fuel costs and falling incomes.

Only 0.8% of the CO2 cut was due to policies from government.

"We have to move from good intentions and we need to do it very quickly," said David Kennedy, chief executive of the CCC.

Mixed results

The report says investment in wind power has been running at a third of the annual amount that will be needed by the end of the decade.

Plans for new nuclear power, and carbon capture and storage projects have also both slipped.

It's much harder to decarbonise the power sector if we don't get nuclear.?

End Quote David Kennedy Chief executive, Committee on Climate Change

There has been an improvement in insulating roofs and cavity walls but little progress on solid walls and low carbon heating. Emissions from new cars have continued to fall but there has been scant progress with vans.

The report examines the notion of a second dash for gas by some who are optimistic that Europe will benefit from the same sort of cheap shale gas boom as that experienced in the USA.

The first dash for gas in the 1990s reduced the UK's emissions as power generation switched from dirtier coal.

But the committee draws on International Energy Agency (IEA) forecasts to project that gas costs up to 2020 will remain around 80p per therm, which will make it unaffordable for electricity when the price for carbon is added.

It says the government is giving mixed messages on gas, and should explicitly rule out a new dash for gas.

However, its projections are challenged by some who believe the global glut of gas will eventually lead to much lower prices if the historic link between oil and gas prices is broken.

'Carbon-constrained world'

Nick Grealy, who runs the pro-shale gas website No Hot Air, told BBC News: "The 80p figure is ludicrous. It may well happen in a tight market until 2015 but after that the deluge."

The CCC says it has modelled a future with gas at 40p per therm which still shows gas confers no advantage over nuclear power.

That is because the government's controversial carbon floor price will increase from ?30 per CO2 tonne in 2020 to ?70 in 2030, forcing up the cost of generating with fossil fuels.

Too many key policies are hobbled by lack of ambition and poor implementation?

End Quote Keith Allott WWF UK

Climate change sceptics have been campaigning to have the targets under the Climate Change Act scrapped, but Ed Davey, the Energy Secretary, recently said the Act would stay.

Mr Kennedy said: "There's nothing we have seen that tells us we are not going to live in a carbon-constrained world."

Asked if the government should have a Plan B in case it fails to deliver a new fleet of nuclear power stations, he added: "Nuclear has a major role. It's much harder to decarbonise the power sector if we don't get nuclear."

If financing could be agreed for a new nuclear station for EDF at Hinkley Point, in Somerset, others would follow, he said.

But he did urge the government to announce swiftly the new level of wind energy subsidies and the Treasury's future cap on the clean energy levy on people's bills.

Some ?8bn a year is needed in clean energy development by 2020, he said, so the chancellor should set his cap on bills at this level, costing ?100 extra per home for in gas and electricity bills.

Wind subsidies

With fuel poverty on the rise some MPs want a tight cap to keep bills down.

But Mr Kennedy said: "There must not be an arbitrary Treasury cap. It must be based on technical studies that show how the carbon cuts under the Climate Change Act can be met."

The committee said the government's forthcoming Energy Bill should include a clear target of 50g of CO2 per kWh of electricity produced by 2030 - compared with some 400g now - in order to keep on track with the agreed 80% CO2 cut by 2050.

Current proposals have no clear over-arching objective, it said, warning this would deter investors.

The review of wind subsidies is due shortly, with the chancellor under pressure from many backbenchers to cut the subsidy by more than the 10% proposed by the Department for Energy and Climate Change - a cut which many experts say would increase the price of energy.

Keith Allott, head of climate change at WWF UK, said: "For the fourth year running, the Committee on Climate Change has made clear that a dramatic step change in ambition is needed.

"Too many key policies - such as the Green Deal, the Green Investment Bank and now the Energy Bill - are hobbled by lack of ambition and poor implementation."

He added that the government risked letting the Climate Change Act "wither by neglect".

New York Times Debuts New Chinese Language Website

One of the benefits to China being an emerging market in the world is that there is now the possibility to gain access to 1.6 billion new customers. The New York Times, with its lagging subscriber base, is trying to do just that when they launched a Chinese language version of their site at cn.nytimes.com. They just have to hope that China?s ?Great Firewall? doesn?t block them out.

The biggest problem about having a Chinese language website is that you have to worry about the possibility of the Chinese government trying to shut you down. To combat this the New York Times Chinese service will be hosted on servers overseas, meaning that it does not have to abide by Chinese censorship directives. China is famous for heavily censoring what their citizens read. The Guardian tried to do this same thing in 2009 and was shut down after a couple of months.

Before you start to worry about the New York Times starting to write propaganda or bending to the strict censorship, their paper is already available to read in China on their regular English website. Joseph Kahn, the paper?s foreign editor said that Chinese government occasionally blocked certain articles from nytimes.com, but that ?We?re not tailoring it to the demands of the Chinese government,? he said. ?China operates a very vigorous firewall. We have no control over that. We hope and expect that Chinese officials will welcome what we?re doing.?

The site will feature around 30 articles a day on national, foreign and arts topics, in addition to editorials. Kahn said that two-thirds of the content would be translated from New York Times articles and one-third would be written by Chinese editors and local freelance journalists. I guess we will find out pretty soon if they will be shut down.

Family tragedy becomes public nightmare when death video hits Twitter

6 hrs.

By the time police asked Internet users to remove graphic photos of a man decapitated after he jumped in front of a train, it was too late for the dead man's son. He had already seen the grisly images ? recorded by teenagers?just after the incident occurred ? when they went viral on Twitter.

You can hear the teens in the background of the shaky cellphone video, recorded Wednesday afternoon in the Netherlands, calling to each other, their adolescent voices tweaked with shock, excitement. "Here. Here is the body. Here he is," one boy shouts in Dutch. Another points to the man's severed head, a few feet away. No one is laughing.?

At least 70 students?at a nearby school ??in the?Kennemerland area of?Haarlem ??witnessed the accident or immediate aftermath, reports?Ijmuider Courant, a Netherlands news site. School officials swung into action. Within 10 minutes of the incident,?administrators?guided students away from the station and back to the school. There, counselors and members of the?Kennemerland police department spent the afternoon talking to kids and later, their parents, about what they had seen.

Yet at the same time that the school was trying to mitigate the psychological damage of the incident, a video of it was being shared among students and?making its way out onto the Internet, by way of Twitter.

This is the video the?dead man's son had already seen when?Kennemerland?police broke the news to the family. It was then that son connected the two, and realized the video was of his father.?

When the police department found out about the video, the department took to Twitter and asked the public to stop sharing the video. In Dutch, the police?asked, "Anyone who has shared pictures of the?Driehuis?train victim, remove them immediately. It is disrespectful and goes too far!"

It's a good-faith plea, made by a police department savvy in the ways of the Internet, enough to know it was already too late. It was too late 15 minutes after the video first hit Twitter, when the teenage boy who first sent it out into cyberspace deleted his original tweet. It had already been?retweeted countless times. And that is the lesson that Evy Elschot, spokesperson for the Kennemerland police department, hopes people will take away from this incident, instead of the gory details.

"The boy didn't understand the impact of what he had done," Elschot told msnbc.com in a telephone interview. Identifying him only as a teenager between the ages of 14 and 16, Elschot described him choking on tears and shaking with panic when confronted by police. "The boy said he wished he didn't do it, that he could take it back, but of course he couldn't," she said.

The boy tweeted (in Dutch), "I hate myself for what I've done," according to news site RTL.?

Elschot told msnbc.com she regrets the story receiving national attention, resulting in?the inevitable spread of a video that causes pain to a family already suffering. (Msnbc.com will not link to the video.) To protect the family's privacy, she would not share the age of the son who saw his father in the video.?

According to?Elschot, it was a very difficult decision to ask people via Twitter to delete the video.

The Kennemerland police department is very active on Twitter, using the official account to communicate with the public on such things as traffic delays, especially crowded areas at festivals, as well as finding witnesses to crimes and fielding complaints (and compliments) from the public. But by using Twitter to discuss a suicide, the Kennemerland police department went against what Elschot describes as Holland's "gentleman's agreement" to not publicize details about suicides.

Elschot said that it's in consideration for families whose?members?commit suicide,?but this practice also abides by the World Health Organization's recommendations for avoiding suicide contagion ? a phenomenon which affects those already at risk. Train suicides account for 4 to 10 percent of suicides in the Netherlands, the Journal of Affective Disorders reported in 2010.??Such a video going viral could spread contagion as well.

Elschot agrees that there's an important discussion to be had, but not about this family's tragedy.

"This really is about young people and how the world is different," she said. "When I was a kid, I might say some things in my small town without thinking, but we only had the telephone. Someone else might read your letter, and there is embarrassment for awhile, but not the oil spread of information we now have on the Internet. Kids need to understand that and their parents need to tell them."

The American Library Association website offers a variety of resources to help parents and kids navigate the Internet safely and responsibly. ?

If you are thinking about harming yourself or attempting suicide, tell someone who can help right away:

  • Call your doctor?s office.
  • Call 911 for emergency services.
  • Go to the nearest hospital emergency room.
  • Visit the website or call the toll-free, 24-hour hotline of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at?1-800-273-TALK (1-800-273-8255)?to be connected to a trained counselor at a suicide crisis center nearest you.

Ask a family member or friend to help you make these calls or take you to the hospital.

(AP) ? Returning to the court where she won her first Grand Slam championship a year ago, Petra Kvitova overcame a shaky start and a late rain delay Tuesday to open her Wimbledon title defense with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Akgul Amanmuradova.

The fourth-seeded Czech fell behind 3-0 and 4-1 in the first set on Centre Court before running off seven straight games to take command against the 96th-ranked player from Uzbekistan.

After Kvitova squandered a match point at 5-3 in the second set, play was suspended and the covers rolled onto the court ? the first rain break of the tournament.

When play resumed half an hour later, it took just three minutes to wrap up the match. After Amanmuradova won the first two points to hold for 5-4, Kvitova closed out the match at love, hitting a service winner and two aces and forcing a backhand error.

"It was unbelievable to come back here as the defending champion," said Kvitova, who beat Maria Sharapova in last year's final. "In the beginning I think I was nervous ? first match on the grass it's always difficult to know what you can expect. I had a lot of mistakes and then I tried to play my game and go forward."

The 6-foot-3 Amanmuradova pushed Kvitova with her big serve, but lacked the consistency on her ground strokes and has now lost in the first round of all five Wimbledon appearances.

Following Kvivota on Centre Court was second-seeded and two-time men's champion Rafael Nadal, who faced Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil. They were to be followed by No. 4 Andy Murray against former top-10 player Nikolay Davydenko.

On Court 1, fifth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was paired against 2002 champion Lleyton Hewitt, who has slipped to 202nd in the rankings and needed a wild card to enter Wimbledon this year.

A day after her sister was eliminated on Court 2, four-time champion and sixth-seeded Serena Williams was playing on the same court against Barbora Zahlavova Strycova.

Playing his first match since having a medical procedure on his heart, 10th-seeded Mardy Fish of the United States served 24 aces and beat Ruben Ramirez-Hidalgo of Spain 7-6 (3), 7-5, 7-6 (1) to reach the second round.

The 30-year-old Fish, who reached the quarterfinals last year, hadn't played a competitive match in 2? months after having an accelerated heartbeat. He played attacking, serve-and-volley tennis and piled up 63 winners against Ramirez-Hidalgo ? at 34, the oldest man in the field.

In early women's play, No. 12 Vera Zvonareva completed a 2-6, 7-6 (3), 6-4 win over Germany's Mona Barthel in a match that had been suspended by darkness at one set apiece on Monday.

Francesca Schiavone, the 24th-seeded Italian, came from behind to overcome 18-year-old British wild card Laura Robson 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. Schiavone, the 2010 French Open champion, received medical treatment after the first set for an apparent muscle problem. She was down 2-3 and 0-40 in the second set but saved the three break points and turned the match around against the 2008 Wimbledon junior champion.

In a men's match between two rising stars of the game, 21-year-old Belgian wild card David Goffin ? who reached the fourth round of the French Open and took a set off Roger Federer ? rallied from a set down against 19-year-old Bernard Tomic to beat the 20th-seeded Australian, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.

Sony NSZ-GS7 Google TV review

Sony NSZGS7 Google TV review

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again and that's exactly what Google has done with Google TV. With the second generation of Google's software hitting older hardware and some TVs, it only makes sense that Sony would revise its hardware and fill the void left when Logitech decided to leave the party. The $199 NSZ-GS7 from Sony might be the perfect little box for those hoping to internet-enable their TV without actually replacing the TV itself. How well it does at that is exactly what you'll find if you click through.

Flipboard (for Android)

Flipboard, one of the first apps that sold many on the idea of the iPad being more than an oversized iPhone, makes its first jump to the Android platform, as a smartphone app. Compatible with Android 2.2 and higher, the free Flipboard for Android delivers the same excellent social reading experience, albeit in smaller, slightly tweaked form. Flipboard for Android has a few niggles?namely the lack of dedicated offline reading and the lack of a dedicated tablet version?but it's still a slick, highly accessible Android reading app that now features Google+ and YouTube support.

The Flipboard ExperienceYou'll be familiar with Flipboard for Android if you've spent time with Flipboard (for iPad)?(Free, 4.5 stars). It features a large rectangular Cover Stories panel featuring highlighted recent articles, and smaller square panels that showcase the latest articles from the sources to which you've subscribed. If the article has an image, it's displayed as a thumbnail that fronts the panel. Overall, the interface, despite being smaller than the iPad version's, looks great is surprisingly uncramped. News Republic, a rival app, is a bit visually cluttered in comparison?and it features advertising at the bottom of the screen.

There are two differences of note from the iPad version of Flipboard: You navigate the Flipboard for Android interface by swiping up or down, not horizontally as with Flipboard for iPad. The change is a welcome, as it feels more natural to navigate with your thumb when using a phone. In addition, Flipboard only displays one article block per screen?the iPad version shows multiple. Don't consider this a drawback, however. This limitation prevents small, hard-to-read panels.

By default, you can't read articles without an internet connection, but you can save individual pages for offline reading if you have an Instapaper, Pocket, or Readability account. Google Currents (Free, 3.5 stars), and Android news aggregator, lets you save articles to your device without third-party apps. Flipboard for Android offers numerous ways to share content: Bump, Facebook, the newly added Google+, Skype, Twitter, email, and many more. I like the variety offered here. You can also leave comments on articles, and view articles in their original forms on their respective Web pages.

Flipboard for Android contains a dedicated YouTube section that lets you view popular videos, or subscribe to a channels simply by tapping the "+" icon located next to a channel's name. A trailer for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter streamed smoothly over a Wi-Fi connection.

Flipping Out for Flipboard
Flipboard for Android, much like Flipboard for iPad, is a superb alternative to standalone RSS feed readers, browsing individual sites, and following Facebook and Twitter feeds. Being smartphone-centric, it's not quite as easy to read as the iPad version, which displays articles on a magazine-size 9.7-inch display. Still, Flipboard is an excellent Android phone app that's worthy of an Editors' Choice award.

Kristin Harriger, Texas Resident, Gets $1.4 Million Utility Bill In Error

ABILENE, Texas -- A lot of people gripe when they get high summertime electric bills. But Kristin Harriger's bill was nearly $1.4 million.

The Abilene, Texas, woman immediately called her provider, Potentia Energy. She quickly learned that her bill was an error.

The utility provider also excused a $66,000 late fee listed on the bill.

The bill said Harriger was being charged 100,000 cents, or $1,000, per kilowatt hour. The normal rate ranges from 8.2 cents to 12.1 cents.

Carmen Balver, director of the nonprofit protection group Consumer Watchdog recommended contacting state officials if people run into difficulty while trying to settle a dispute about an over-the-top bill.

Panic as cops shoot dead cops at Mexico City airport

Alfredo Estrella / AFP - Getty Images

Federal Police officers stand guard at an entrance near the fast-food area of Benito Juarez international airport Terminal 2, in Mexico City, where two police officers were shot dead and a third was wounded on Monday. Airport spokesman Jorge Andres Gomez said authorities are going through the security cameras to know the exact events of the shooting.

By msnbc.com news services

MEXICO CITY -- Three policemen died in a shootout with two other officers suspected of drug trafficking at Mexico City's airport on Monday, as panicked travelers scrambled for cover in the busy facility.

The shootout occurred when three federal officers approached the two suspects in the airport's Terminal 2, which handles international and domestic flights. Two agents were killed at the terminal and another later died of his injuries in hospital.

More than a dozen shots were heard, Milenio Television reported. Television footage showed a body lying on the floor of the terminal in what appeared to be a publicly accessible area of the airport.

Three shots rang out at first, witness Israel Lopez, a 23-year-old Mexico City student who had gone to the airport to see off a friend, told The Associated Press. Lopez didn't see who those shots were directed at, but then the gunfire came closer.

"We were in the food court, and some policemen came in and started shooting at another policeman who was on the floor," Lopez told the AP. "We dove to the floor and covered ourselves with chairs."

Mexico's drug war is also part of a drug culture with roots in music, movies and even religion

Lopez said the shooters wore blue uniforms like those of federal police who provide security at the airport. He said the shooters then ran to the parking area "as if they were pursuing somebody," and he lost sight of them.

'One of the safest places'
Robert Gray, an evangelical missionary from Hart, Michigan, but who has lived with his family in the city of Puebla for the past four years, arrived at the airport after the shooting with his wife, two daughters and son to catch a flight back to the U.S. to visit family.

"It's surprising to see it happening at the airport. It's one of the safest places in the city," Gray told the AP.

The suspects, who remain at large, are believed to be part of a larger group of officials involved in a cocaine ring, Mexico's security ministry said in a statement.

"The Federal Police has identified the two officers who opened fire and several investigative units are now focused on capturing them," the federal Public Safety Department said in a statement.

14 mutilated corpses, threat message to drug cartel found in Mexican city

Airport spokesman Jorge Gomez told Milenio that aircraft departures and arrivals continued normally after the incident.

The airport said in a press statement that the terminal and flights were operating normally following what it described as "a dispute in an open-access area." But the food court remained blocked to public access for hours after the shooting.

Mexico City has seen relatively low murder rates compared to the rest of the country, where drug violence has killed around 55,000 people in the past five-and-a-half years.

Severed heads
But attacks have been creeping up in the capital and its surrounding neighborhoods, with more than 300 gangland killings recorded last year.

Mexico's airports and ports are busy areas for drug smugglers. So far this year federal police have seized more than 440 pounds of cocaine at the capital's airport, double the amount taken there last year.

Alfredo Estrella / AFP - Getty Images

A passenger speaks on her cellphone at Benito Juarez international airport Terminal 2, in Mexico City, where two police officers were shot dead and a third was wounded on Monday.

In 2007, the severed heads of three employees of a customs brokerage firm were found near the airport and in the nearby state of Mexico.

The decapitations were apparently retaliation for the seizure of a half-ton of Colombian cocaine at the airport, officials said at the time.

Mexico got wrong man in high-profile drug arrest?

In 2008, federal police chief Edgar Millan was gunned down inside his Mexico City home, and one of the suspects in that killing had worked as an anti-drug officer at the Mexico City airport.

The suspect had a notebook with detailed information on drug trafficking at the airport, and officials said federal investigations into those operations may have been a key motive for Millan's killing.

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Love and Companionship for Baby Boomers | oomphTV | baby ...

LOVE & COMPANIONSHIP FOR BABY BOOMERS
By Michael Thomas Masters

romantic-heart
Baby Boomers can experience romantic love and companionship. Persons over age forty-five express as much romantic passion as those in their twenties. We can surely fall in love at any age, in our 50s, 60s and even 80s and 90s. This is true for all mature adults, gay, straight, bi-sexual or transgender. In fact, we boomers (and older folks) are becoming the oomph generation!

More and more Baby Boomers are entering the dating world to find companionship and to have someone to communicate with, whether or not romance (and more) follows.

People are living longer and healthier lives as a direct result of looking for love and/or companionship later in life, as well as keeping positive and healthy attitudes. Countless Boomers (and older) are far more active than previous elder generations.

Even in our media and marketing worlds, mature romance comes in a rainbow of diversity, as is evident in countless films, plays, TV programs, TV commercials and printed materials.

For instance, consider the touching, amusing, insightful and offbeat comedy-romance film, HAROLD & MAUDE. At a funeral, a depressed, twenty-year old, Harold (Burt Cort) befriends Maude (the effervescent Ruth Gordon), a seventies plus woman who has a zest for life. Maude and Harold spend much time together, even falling in love, during which time she exposes Harold to the wonders and possibilities of life.

On the small screen, the classic television series THE GOLDEN GIRLS remains a tribute to mature, knowledgeable and lively people, with the series main characters mostly over fifty and full of oomph!

In the past, mature or prime time adults (or seniors, if you prefer) chose more traditional venues, such as cruise ships, bowling clubs, placing personal ads and church gatherings in seeking companionship and/or romantic partners.

With the tagline, ?this is what love feels like,? in the film BEGINNERS, a seventy-five years young gay man (Christopher Plummer) meets his younger lover Andy (Goran Visnjc) through social circles, which worked for this happy and loving couple.

Even though these tried and true in-person dating settings are still suitable and work for many single Boomers, on-line Internet dating and surfing has become tremendously popular, saving time, cash and even recurrent travel miles. After all, prime-time age people are far more computer literate than we often give ourselves credit.

Considering the fact that in 2012 half of all people in America over fifty are single, it makes sense that dating sites for those in their golden years are popping up worldwide. Furthermore, in our neighboring country of Canada, where 42% of the entire population is dating online, over the age of forty-five dating has become very acceptable.

Additionally, like plenty of folks under age fifty, many prime-time adults do not feel comfortable hitting the singles bars and other social gathering scenes.

At the time of meeting someone through online dating, you can get to know them better by sharing more information during initial e-mails; than you would with someone, you just start dating in-person. This is because you often spend time sending e-mail (or snail mail) messages back and forth, talking on the telephone and possibly even sharing personal photos or videos.

When you do meet for the first time, taking security precautions are essential, such as meeting in a public place, letting people know where you are going and when you will be back, and taking your cell phone with you. Such precautions are wise to follow even for non-Internet generated first dates.

Remember that human companionship and love can occur when and where we least expect it. In addition to increasing changes of meeting someone, being involved in social activities, gatherings and clubs often places us in environments with other single and interesting Baby Boomers also in search of relationships and/or love.

While further examining media Baby Boomer theme examples, consider the film LAST CHANCE HARRY in which a lonely and single man (Dustin Hoffman) in his 60s, while attending his daughter?s wedding, finds his romantic spirits lifted (and his life changed) by a new female friend (Emma Thompson) in her 50s.

Sound a little too romantic? Hey, sometimes life can be that way. Moreover, love happens to folks of all ages!

If you consider on-line dating as an option, checkout these Baby Boomer (and plus) companionship and dating websites, or surf the Internet on your own for other dating sites and social meeting alternatives.

Cassini shows why jet streams cross-cut Saturn

ScienceDaily (June 25, 2012) ? Turbulent jet streams, regions where winds blow faster than in other places, churn east and west across Saturn. Scientists have been trying to understand for years the mechanism that drives these wavy structures in Saturn's atmosphere and the source from which the jets derive their energy.

In a new study appearing in the June edition of the journal Icarus, scientists used images collected over several years by NASA's Cassini spacecraft to discover that the heat from within the planet powers the jet streams. Condensation of water from Saturn's internal heating led to temperature differences in the atmosphere. The temperature differences created eddies, or disturbances that move air back and forth at the same latitude, and those eddies, in turn, accelerated the jet streams like rotating gears driving a conveyor belt.

A competing theory had assumed that the energy for the temperature differences came from the sun. That is how it works in Earth's atmosphere.

"We know the atmospheres of planets such as Saturn and Jupiter can get their energy from only two places: the sun or the internal heating. The challenge has been coming up with ways to use the data so that we can tell the difference," said Tony Del Genio of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, N.Y., the lead author of the paper and a member of the Cassini imaging team.

The new study was possible in part because Cassini has been in orbit around Saturn long enough to obtain the large number of observations required to see subtle patterns emerge from the day-to-day variations in weather. "Understanding what drives the meteorology on Saturn, and in general on gaseous planets, has been one of our cardinal goals since the inception of the Cassini mission," said Carolyn Porco, imaging team lead, based at the Space Science Institute, Boulder, Colo. "It is very gratifying to see that we're finally coming to understand those atmospheric processes that make Earth similar to, and also different from, other planets."

Rather than having a thin atmosphere and solid-and-liquid surface like Earth, Saturn is a gas giant whose deep atmosphere is layered with multiple cloud decks at high altitudes. A series of jet streams slice across the face of Saturn visible to the human eye and also at altitudes detectable to the near-infrared filters of Cassini's cameras. While most blow eastward, some blow westward. Jet streams occur on Saturn in places where the temperature varies significantly from one latitude to another.

Thanks to the filters on Cassini's cameras, which can see near-infrared light reflected to space, scientists now have observed the Saturn jet stream process for the first time at two different, low altitudes. One filtered view shows the upper part of the troposphere, a high layer of the atmosphere where Cassini sees thick, high-altitude hazes and where heating by the sun is strong. Views through another filter capture images deeper down, at the tops of ammonia ice clouds, where solar heating is weak but closer to where weather originates. This is where water condenses and makes clouds and rain.

In the new study, which is a follow-up to results published in 2007, the authors used automated cloud tracking software to analyze the movements and speeds of clouds seen in hundreds of Cassini images from 2005 through 2012.

"With our improved tracking algorithm, we've been able to extract nearly 120,000 wind vectors from 560 images, giving us an unprecedented picture of Saturn's wind flow at two independent altitudes on a global scale," said co-author and imaging team associate John Barbara, also at the Goddard Institute for Space Studies. The team's findings provide an observational test for existing models that scientists use to study the mechanisms that power the jet streams.

By seeing for the first time how these eddies accelerate the jet streams at two different altitudes, scientists found the eddies were weak at the higher altitudes where previous researchers had found that most of the sun's heating occurs. The eddies were stronger deeper in the atmosphere. Thus, the authors could discount heating from the sun and infer instead that the internal heat of the planet is ultimately driving the acceleration of the jet streams, not the sun. The mechanism that best matched the observations would involve internal heat from the planet stirring up water vapor from Saturn's interior. That water vapor condenses in some places as air rises and releases heat as it makes clouds and rain. This heat provides the energy to create the eddies that drive the jet streams.

The condensation of water was not actually observed; most of that process occurs at lower altitudes not visible to Cassini. But the condensation in mid-latitude storms does happen on both Saturn and Earth. Storms on Earth -- the low- and high-pressure centers on weather maps -- are driven mainly by the sun's heating and do not mainly occur because of the condensation of water, Del Genio said. On Saturn, the condensation heating is the main driver of the storms, and the sun's heating is not important.

The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the Cassini-Huygens mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington. The Cassini orbiter and its two onboard cameras were designed, developed and assembled at JPL. The imaging team is based at the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colo.
