N.C. coastal residents protest proposed insurance hike ...

They?re mad as heck, and they don?t want to take it anymore.

A parade of people from North Carolina?s coastal counties ? local officials, real estate representatives and Joe and Jane Citizen ? marched to the lectern and railed against the possibility of a 30 percent jump in their homeowners insurance rates Wednesday.

They decried the rate increase sought by the insurance industry as excessive, unwarranted and unfair, given that the rates in 18 coastal counties would rise far more than in the rest of the state if the industry?s request is approved. Moreover, the last time a rate increase was approved in North Carolina, in 2008, rates along the coast rose as much as 29.8 percent ? far above the statewide average of 4.05 percent.

?We don?t understand why you keep doing this to us, and we would like for it to stop,? testified Emilie Swearingen, a member of the Kure Beach Town Council. ?Stop this discrimination against the coastal communities.?

Others raised the specter of elderly residents being forced to sell their homes or being foreclosed upon if the increase is approved.

Auditors at the state Department of Insurance, which hosted the public comment session at its downtown Raleigh offices, are studying the rate request filed this month by the N.C. Rate Bureau, which represents insurers. If the department staff and the Rate Bureau fail to agree on an appropriate homeowners rate, Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin would set a rate after conducting a hearing where the two parties would present evidence. That rate could be appealed to the courts.

Lucy Vance, a Brunswick County resident, said her annual homeowners insurance premiums ? plus wind and hail protection she purchases separately from the state-created N.C. Beach Plan ? have risen from $1,844 in 2004 to $3,597 this year.

?In those seven years, I have never lost one shingle,? she said. ?Please reject the rate. Please consider lowering it.?

Many homeowners are hit with annual premium increases even in years when the state-approved rate hasn?t changed because their insurers have reduced or eliminated discounts, or because they have ?replacement cost? policies that permit increases to keep pace with construction costs. About 2 million residences are covered by homeowners policies in North Carolina.

Rates higher than inland

The industry justifies its request for a rate increase by citing more claims, higher costs per claim, higher costs for the reinsurance they buy to insulate them from catastrophic losses and, along the coast, potential losses should a severe hurricane strike.

None of the more than 30 speakers at Wednesday?s hearing ? none of whom spoke on the industry?s behalf ? were buying those arguments.

?We haven?t had a serious storm in Dare County in awhile,? said Bobby Outten, the county manager. ?We had Irene. Irene was a flood event, very little wind damage. Flood events aren?t covered by this type of insurance. We can?t understand what would justify a 30 percent rate increase.?

Outten said the increase for the owner of an average Dare County home ? a structure valued at $160,000, not including the cost of the land ? would amount to $881 a year. That would raise the annual premium of ?the average working-class person? to a little more than $3,800.

Several critics of the rate request blasted the computer models the industry uses to calculate future risks from hurricanes.

?The modeling used ... is highly suspect,? said Tom Thompson, chairman of N.C. 20, a nonprofit that promotes economic development in coastal counties. He also complained that the data that go into those models are not shared with the public.

Several coastal municipalities have passed resolutions opposing the rate increase, and those were presented. ?Homeowners in coastal communities already pay premiums at two to three times the rate charged for inland properties, in addition to having separate wind and hail policies,? notes the resolution passed by the Kure Beach Town Council.

Goodwin didn?t preside over Wednesday?s hearing in order to remain impartial on the rate request, as required by law. But Steve Candler, CEO of the Brunswick County Association of Realtors, testified Goodwin has already spoken against an increase.

Last week, Goodwin appeared at a candidates? forum hosted by his association, and, Candler said, told those in attendance, ?and I quote, ?I will not allow any increase in homeowner rates if I?m in office.???

But Goodwin, speaking through an Insurance Department spokeswoman, said he was misquoted.

What Goodwin actually said, spokeswoman Marni Schribman said in an email message, was that ?a homeowners insurance increase has never been approved on his watch.?

Schribman added that Goodwin ?covered multiple topics quickly, so he understands how his comments might have been misconstrued. However, legally, he could never make a statement such as ?there will never be any homeowners rate increases? because it would open him (and the Department of Insurance) up to legal action by the citizens, the insurance industry or both.?

For the record, since Goodwin took office in 2009, the insurance industry hasn?t sought an increase in homeowners rates ? until now.

Gregory Lacy, LaQuron Lacy Ran Home Strip Club & Allegedly ...

A murder investigation has led to the horrific discovery of a Southern California in-home strip club, where seven adopted children lived and were allegedly abused.

The house, located in Perris, Calif., had a dancing pole and platform, alcohol and a private "Exotic Zone," the Valley News reports. It belongs to Gregory Bernard Lacy, 60, and LaQuron D. McLean Lacy, 43, who have both been arrested on suspicion of abusing their children.

Police made the discovery while investigating the July fatal shooting of Calvin Lynch, 46, in the Lacys' front yard.

The adopted children, all under 11 years old, told authorites that their "Mom" and "Dad" hit them with belts, a metal cane, fists, hangers and metal objects, leaving them with injuries and scars, the Press-Enterprise reports. The children said that their "Mom" would lock them in their bedrooms and refuse to feed them, and a 6-year-old child said his "Dad" threatened the children with a Taser.

A 7-year-old girl told police that her "Dad" had molested her on a bathroom floor and some of the children said they had witnessed it.

The children also witnessed the all-night strip club parties, and investigators found at least five Ecstasy pills sitting on the home's kitchen counter, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Lynch's murder is still under investigation, and no arrests have been made.

Gregory is being held on $1 million bail and LaQuron is being held on $50,000 bail, both on multiple counts of child abuse, the Inland Empire Weekly reports. Their arraignments are scheduled for later this month.

All seven children have been removed from the home by county caseworkers.

Man convicted in Texas pastor's killing gets death

(AP) ? A convicted felon was sentenced to death Tuesday for killing a pastor and severely beating the pastor's secretary during a robbery in their North Texas church.

A jury in Fort Worth deliberated for a little more than an hour before deciding the sentence for Steven Lawayne Nelson, 25. He was convicted last week of killing the Rev. Clint Dobson at the NorthPointe Baptist Church in nearby Arlington.

Jurors had the option of sentencing Nelson to death or life in prison without parole. For a death sentence, jurors had to unanimously agree that Nelson poses a danger to society, that he intended to kill and that there were no mitigating circumstances to diminish his culpability.

Nelson remained seated as the sentence was read because he is handcuffed and wearing leg shackles. He showed no reaction when the judge read his sentence.

The pastor's widow, Laura Dobson, said her husband was a smart, kind and funny man who will be recalled with fondness by many ? unlike Nelson.

"I refuse to let you get the best of me," she said in a victim impact statement after the sentence. "You have wrecked so many lives ... that nobody will want to remember you after this."

Nelson was convicted of suffocating Dobson in March 2011. He also beat the church secretary, Judy Elliott, so severely that she suffered a broken jaw and memory problems. He then stole her car and other items. It took the jury little more than an hour to find him guilty.

Phillip Rozeman, Laura Dobson's father, said he couldn't believe the reasoning behind the loss of his son-in-law's life.

"It is hard for me to fathom that you did what you did for a car and a laptop and a phone," Rozeman said in his victim impact statement.

In closing arguments Tuesday, prosecutors called the crime heinous and vicious.

Blood from both victims was found on a pair of Nelson's shoes, and studs from his belt were found at the church, according to testimony.

Nelson denied killing the minister, blaming two friends for the crime. He said he stayed outside and only came into the church to steal a laptop.

He said at trial that he saw the 28-year-old Dobson and his secretary already sprawled on the church floor. He admitted stepping around them to get the laptop, but said they were still alive when he was there.

Prosecutor Bob Gill said during closing arguments Tuesday that Nelson had committed crimes since he was a young teen and that he has been given many chances to rehabilitate in juvenile facilities.

"The consequences have not straightened him out," Gill said.

Nelson even caused problems while awaiting his murder trial, stashing razor blades in his cell, breaking sprinklers and fatally strangling an inmate with a blanket, according to testimony.

"Now you know why the state decided to seek the death penalty," Gill told jurors. "That's all that can be done here. It could not be more clear."

Defense attorneys asked jurors to spare Nelson's life, saying he had a troubled childhood. His mother neglected him, his father abused him and he was prescribed medication for attention deficit disorder. But Nelson never got the help he needed ? even after he set his mother's bed on fire when he was 3 ? never learned how to get along with others and not hurt people.

Referring to Nelson's childhood, defense attorney Bill Ray said the initial decisions "that put him on a track for permanent derailment were beyond his control, and if that's not a mitigating factor, I don't know what is."

New type of cosmic ray discovered after 100 years

ScienceDaily (Oct. 16, 2012) ? Using the European X-ray astronomy satellite XMM-Newton(1), researchers from CNRS(2) and CEA (3) have discovered a new source of cosmic rays. In the vicinity of the remarkable Arches cluster, near the center of the Milky Way, these particles are accelerated in the shock wave generated by tens of thousands of young stars moving at a speed of around 700,000 km/h. These cosmic rays produce a characteristic X-ray emission by interacting with the atoms in the surrounding gas. Their origin differs from that of the cosmic rays discovered exactly a hundred years ago by Victor Hess, which originate in the explosions of supernovae.

The findings are published in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.

A hundred years ago, the Austrian physicist Victor Franz Hess discovered the existence of ionizing radiation of extraterrestrial origin, which he called cosmic rays. Today, their nature is well understood. When certain stars at the end of their lives explode and become supernovae, their matter is ejected at supersonic speed, generating shock waves that accelerate the particles. As a result, some atomic nuclei gain very high kinetic energy and enter Earth's atmosphere.

However, low-energy cosmic rays(4) are not detected in the region of our planet, since the solar wind prevents them from entering the heliosphere. Little is therefore known about their chemical composition and flux outside the Solar System, although everything suggests they play a significant role in the Galaxy. For instance, by ionizing and heating the densest interstellar clouds, they probably regulate the formation of stars.

The authors of the article began by studying the X-ray emission that should theoretically be generated by low-energy cosmic rays in the interstellar medium. They then looked for signs of this theoretical emission in X-ray data collected by XMM-Newton since its launch in 1999. By analyzing the properties of the X-ray emission of interstellar iron recorded by the satellite, they found the signatures of a large fast ion population in the vicinity of the Arches cluster, about one hundred light-years from the center of the Milky Way. The stars in this cluster are traveling together at a speed of approximately 700,000 km/h. The cosmic rays are in all likelihood produced in the high-speed collision of the star cluster with a gas cloud in its path (Fig. 1). In this particular region, the energy density of the accelerated ions is around a thousand times greater than that of cosmic rays in the neighborhood of the Solar System.

This is the first time that a major source of low-energy cosmic rays(5) has been discovered outside the Solar System. It shows that the shock waves of supernovae are not the only objects that can cause mass acceleration of atomic nuclei in the Galaxy. These findings should make it possible to identify new sources of ions in the interstellar medium, and may lead to a better understanding of the effects of these energetic particles on star formation.

Notes:

(1) XMM-Newton is an ESA satellite to which CNES, CEA and CNRS have made a significant contribution.

(4) Cosmic rays whose kinetic energy is less than half a billion electronvolts.

(5) The cosmic rays discovered are hadronic, in other words largely made up of atomic nuclei. Hadronic cosmic rays make up about 99% of the galactic particles detected in the vicinity of the Earth. Electrons and positrons, which make up the leptonic component of cosmic rays, are far less abundant.

Former Washington legislator Sid Snyder dead at 86

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) -- Former Senate Majority Leader Sid Snyder died Sunday at his home in Long Beach. He was 86.

Gov. Chris Gregoire said Snyder, a Democrat, was "legendary for getting things done and for his never-failing courtesy and civility."

Snyder started work in Olympia in 1949 as an elevator operator at the Capitol and later moved on to become bill room supervisor. He was assistant chief clerk of the House for 12 years and spent 19 years as secretary of the Senate.

In 1990, Snyder was appointed to a Senate seat after the death of another senator, and that fall was elected to seat in a special election. In 1995, Snyder was elected as the Senate Democrats' leader, and he stayed in that position for seven years, including five as majority leader. He retired from the Legislature in 2002 and returned to work at his two grocery stores, Sid's Market and the Midtown Market, in Long Beach.

In July 2006, the road leading onto the Capitol campus was renamed "Sid Snyder Avenue."

U.S. Sen. Patty Murray said that Snyder was "kind and gracious, and because he had the respect of everyone that knew him, he was able to bring people together to solve problems for the people of our state."

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Bette Kennedy Snyder, three children and four grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Carl P. Aase Gymnasium at Ilwaco High School in Ilwaco.

You Will Need:

5 lb Boston butt
18 oz bottle BBQ sauce
12 oz cola drink
? c mayonnaise
2 t vinegar
2 T sugar
1 bag slaw
Hamburger buns

Directions:

Place pork in crockpot and pour BBQ sauce and cola over pork.
Cover and cook on high 8 hours (or low 12 -16 hours), until pork is tender and meat shreds easily.

For slaw, combine mayonnaise, vinegar and sugar in a large bowl. Mix well, and toss with slaw. Serve pork and slaw on hamburger buns.

Activist Post: Comprehensive Survival Food List & Storage Guide

Rady Ananda
Activist Post

Survival food storage practice doesn?t require Mormon membership, but the tradition, wrought from their first Utah winter, is worth emulating should disaster strike or technology fail, two survival books by Mat Stein. This guide, Part 2 of my survival series, relies on Stein?s books, and websites dedicated to survival preparedness.

At its most basic, food storage wisdom demands that you buy what you eat, and organize and label the boxes or bins with contents and date. Stocks should be rotated based on shelf-life longevity. Using Stein?s general guide, when properly packaged and stored, various foods last several months, years or decades, as follows:

10 years or longer: Honey, sugar, salt, soy sauce, apple cider vinegar, black pepper, Worcestershire sauce and wheat berries.

5-10 years: Most dried legumes and whole grains, dehydrated cheese, instant or vacuum-packed coffee, baking powder, powdered eggs and frozen butter.

Up to 5 years: Processed (partially hydrogenated) liquid vegetable oils, Crisco shortening, cornmeal and corn flour, and nonfat powdered milk.

2-3 years: Bullion cubes, cornstarch, white rice, powdered gelatin, white wheat flour, white flour pasta, tapioca, textured vegetable protein, hydrogenated peanut butter, catsup, canned salmon and sardines, most dried fruits, and most other canned foods except meats, some fish and fruits, as well as sprouting seeds (alfalfa, mung, soybean, wheat, etc.).

Up to 18 months: Canned meats and seafood (halibut, mackerel, tuna and shrimp), unshelled raw nuts, dry active yeast, bagged snack chips, cake mixes, dry pudding, herbal and black teas, bottled juices, most seasonings and extracts, jams and jellies, canned non-citrus fruits (blackberries, blueberries, cherries, pears, peaches, plums, etc.), cranberry sauce, pickles, canned rhubarb, and sauerkraut.

One year: Canned nuts, breakfast cereals, rolled oats, bottled dressings, mayonnaise, natural liquid vegetable oils, candy bars, bottled juices (grapefruit, pineapple, apricot, orange), canned citrus fruits and natural nut berries.

Six months: Most boxed food, fresh potatoes, granola, shelled raw nuts, and unshelled roasted nuts.

Studies by the Brigham Young University Dept. of Nutrition, Dietetics and Food Science observes that proper packaging, storage methods and temperatures should yield the following storage capacities:

30 years or more: Whole grain wheat and white rice that has been packaged to remove oxygen and stored at room temperature or cooler.

www.OffgridOutpost.comUp to 30 years: beans, dried apples, macaroni, potato flakes and oats.

20-30 years: freeze-dried foods.

Up to 20 years: properly stored nonfat dried milk.

Baking powder will store for ?many years? and baking soda will keep indefinitely. Most food stores longer under cool, dry and dark conditions.

Either of Stein?s books is worth owning for the section on root cellars and other cold storage (above- and below-ground), which is accompanied by detailed diagrams and tips, depending on the environment.

Of note, compromised cans should be avoided. Don?t waste money on dented cans, and never eat from cans that bulge, leak or spit at you when opened. Most US canaries use BPA, a ?known endocrine disruptor that affects hormones and could be causing breast and prostate cancer, heart disease, brain retardation, impotence and infertility.? BPA-free cans are available.

Modern Survival Blog recommends clear, see-through bins to keep track of what you have, given that most folks need to see what the have to avoid over-buying one staple and not enough of others. They also recommend a variety of survival foods including bulk, ready-to-eat, dehydrated and freeze-dried foods.

Stein also provides a chart for using dry ice fumigation to protect against pests, and spends considerable time discussing the various packaging methods, most of which can be done in the home.

MREs

?Meals ready to eat? are ideal when you have no stove and little or no water, or if you?re on the move.

After Hurricane Isaac, camouflaged men with no identifying insignia passed out boxes of food made by Sopakco. These MREs come fully prepared and include a magnesium heater bag for the main course, with each side dish individually wrapped ? scissors not included, but needed. Only the powdered beverage requires water.

One full meal packet provides 1,200 to 1,300 calories, so you?d need to eat two or three a day to maintain your weight, depending on how many calories you?re burning through.

The meals are varied and palatable, even though stuffed with unpronounceable chemicals and genetically modified organisms (GMO). But, remember, this is emergency food ? not food on which humans thrive. Each meal comes with crackers or bread, cheese and peanut butter, a powdered drink, and the main course which could be imitation boneless pork rib, grilled beef patty, sloppy Joe, chili and macaroni, vegetarian ratatouille or beef ravioli in meat sauce.

The box comes with 14 meals (a 7-day supply for me), which you can buy online for about $70, and the whole thing weighs under 20 pounds. It?s got an 8-year shelf life (if stored between 33 and 50 degrees F; otherwise as low as one-month if stored at 120 degrees).

The heater bag is an MRE?s best feature. Patent No. 5611329 by TrueTech, Inc. uses pulverized magnesium, food-grade iron and sodium which, when combined with a tiny amount of water, reacts to produce scalding heat. According to one site, these heater bags have a 5-year shelf life, and pose not only burn risk, but also risk of explosion as they release hydrogen gas during the reaction. So keep the bag away from spark or flame when ?cooking? your meal.

Dehydrated Food

A 14-pound bucket of Augason Farms dehydrated food costs $65, and provides over 2,000 calories a day for twelve days. Budget-wise, this is a much better deal than a box of MREs. The reusable plastic bucket with a watertight lid, and the 25-year shelf life, make this kit a superior choice if you?re not on the run, and you have measuring cups, pans, a stove and water.

Eight varieties of food are included, each in its own resealable pouch. Scissors not needed. However, not all the mylar bags were labeled, which only adds to the stress of having to eat emergency food. On the plus side, the federal food stamps program (now called SNAP) does cover the purchase.

While these foods are also preserved with chemicals and GMOs, Augason does not add hydrogenated oils, trans fats or MSG. The food is nitrogen flushed and packed with oxygen absorbers.

All the food is pretty tasty, and the brown sugar oatmeal was so delish that I added a fresh container of rolled oats to my diet. The cheesy broccoli rice dish only has wisps of broccoli, so I simply mixed it with the beef-flavored vegetarian meat substitute. Sounds gross, I know, but damn it tastes good, just like you?d expect a Whopper? to be deliciously deadly.

Organics and Seeds

Northbay Trading sells organic survivor food, but for many the cost is prohibitive. Mat Stein recommends storing and rotating sproutable seeds and provides a how-to section.

Most seeds will sprout in 2-5 days, but be aware that non-organic potatoes and tomato sprouts are poisonous, having been treated with fungicide. Stein recommends 20-50 pounds of sprouting seeds and supplies for a one-year supply for an adult male.

?Grains and legumes are probably the most compact and inexpensive type of food that can be stored for emergency preparedness,? he writes, noting that, ?most nutritious in their raw form, sprouts can be saut?ed, stir-fried, boiled or cooked into almost any dish,? providing ?a source of garden-fresh veggies any time of the year.?

Ten Staples and Water

Activist Post recommends these ten foods available at your local grocer: rice, beans, cornmeal, lard, salt, white and brown sugar, and canned meat, fruit and veggies. Buy a healthy supply of each that you can rotate over time.

Survival food storage can?t be fully discussed without mentioning water. The bare minimum is a gallon a day per person, and double to triple that if you?re relying on dehydrated foods. Ure and Levy provide an in-depth discussion of water storage. Take note, though, that most plastic jugs in the US contain BPA (like canned foods), so be sure to buy BPA-free jugs.

Some preppers lay in food stocks that will cover them for a year or more and with today?s food technologies, this is entirely possible and easily doable. I?d also recommend not storing all your eggs in one basket; in other words, store your food and water in different places to avoid losing everything in one disaster that affects that room.

Airlines eye subway-style self-boarding

8 hrs.

Self-service is king when it comes to flying these days, with travelers checking in online, downloading their own boarding passes and tagging their bags.

But passengers outside the U.S. often perform one more task on their own at the airport: self-boarding.

Scan your boarding pass at a gate equipped with a subway-like turnstile, and voil?, you?re on your way to the plane?no gate agent required.

It?s an option travelers seem to love: Almost 90 percent said self-boarding is their favorite self-service technology in a survey of more than 2,500 passengers from 70-plus countries released on Tuesday. The poll was conducted by SITA, a company that specializes in air transport communications.

You?ll likely encounter automated gates at airports in Europe or Asia, but in the United States, they are still a rare sight. One of the few places you?ll see them is at the shiny, new Terminal 3 at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas, where JetBlue has been testing self-boarding since July.

?We are receiving positive feedback -- customers do like it and it does speed up the boarding process,? said JetBlue spokeswoman Tamara Young. ?There?s not the bunching that was previously experienced with the agents taking the tickets.?

Gate agents are still there, watching over the process to make sure travelers don?t encounter any snags, Young said.

Those snags are one of the reasons airlines have been proceeding carefully, industry observers said.

?If you've seen people using self-check-out at supermarkets, they aren't generally as adept at scanning bar codes as the actual check out personnel,? said Robert W. Mann Jr., an airline industry analyst.

?When you narrow it down to the pointy end of the funnel, when everybody is trying to get on the airplane through one door, the person who struggles with the scanning is holding up 150 people and they?re all (upset).?

Still, self-boarding seems to be an attractive option for both airlines and travelers.

Some 17 international carriers now use the technology and there are 113 automated gates at airports around the world, according to recent figures collected by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). The group, which represents some of the world?s biggest airlines, supports self-boarding as part of its "Fast Travel"?initiative.

Airlines that pioneered the process include SAS and Lufthansa in Europe, and All Nippon Airways in Asia, said IATA spokesman Perry Flint.

Passengers may like the service because it?s somewhat empowering, Mann said. Travel requires people to give up a lot of control over their environment, so this is a small instance where they can take charge.

But the cost of installing the gates may be an obstacle for carriers in the U.S., where airlines usually own or rent the check-in space in airports where they operate and can?t spread the expense among several different users, Flint said.

?It may not make economic sense for the airline to make that investment if they?re the only ones who are going to be using it and if they are already operating at a very high level of efficiency,? Flint said.

Bottom?line: Don?t look for automated self-boarding gates dominating U.S. airports any time soon, but be ready for subway-like boarding in other parts of the world.

And don?t forget your smartphone when you travel.

The SITA survey also found that the number of passengers with the gadgets has ?risen dramatically? over the past year, from 54 percent to 70 percent.

?We?re now at the tipping point of explosive growth in mobile services offered to passengers, which will give them more control over their journey and reduce stress,? said Francesco Violante, the CEO of SITA.

Reds replace injured ace Cueto on playoff roster

CINCINNATI (AP) ? The Reds dropped injured ace Johnny Cueto from their division series roster Wednesday, replacing him with right-hander Mike Leake a few hours before Game 4 against the San Francisco Giants.

Major League Baseball granted permission for the move at 11:30 a.m., less than five hours before the first pitch.

Cueto pulled muscles in his side during the first inning of the series opener Saturday night. The Reds had been hoping their 19-game winner would improve enough to be able to pitch again, but the injury was still bothering him.

Cincinnati was reluctant to make the move with Cueto because it also leaves him ineligible to pitch in the NL championship series, should Cincinnati make it that far. The Reds lead the best-of-five series 2-1.

"It's tough taking your potential Cy Young guy out of your rotation," general manager Walt Jocketty said.

Jocketty said the Reds filed the paperwork for the roster switch shortly before 10 a.m. on Wednesday and got MLB's permission at 11:30. Leake, their No. 5 starter, had been told that the move was possible, so he should be ready to start.

The Giants went with left-hander Barry Zito, who has been at his best late in the season. San Francisco had won the last 11 games he started.

The Reds' medical staff determined that Cueto's injury could bother him into the start of the NLCS, which was a major factor in the decision to remove him from the roster.

"It was a very, very tough decision to make, but our medical staff felt at best, Johnny would be able to pitch maybe one game in the next series if we get there, if he were available for that series," Jocketty said.

The Reds' other option was to keep Cueto on the roster and start Mat Latos on only three days of rest, putting the pitching staff in flux. Latos will pitch Game 5 if needed.

"It's quite a blow but at the same time, you hope Leake steps up and pitches well," manager Dusty Baker said.

Cueto pulled up after throwing a pitch in the first inning of Cincinnati's 5-2 win in San Francisco on Saturday night. The injury was initially diagnosed as muscle spasms in the back, but a strain in his right side was later detected.

That's an especially troubling injury for Cueto, who turns his back to the batter before each delivery, putting a lot of stress on his side.

"It's kind of a quandary as far as the injury goes," pitching coach Bryan Price said.

The Reds were concerned that if they sent him back to the mound before the injury was fully healed, he could cause worse damage.

"It's more of a muscle strain in the side that was very mild, but with his torque and the way he pitches and his twisting motion, we didn't want to take the risk of injuring him," Jocketty said.

The major setback comes at the end of a record-setting season for the Reds' rotation. None of the five starters got hurt, a franchise first.

Leake had to be pushed back a day during a series against Cleveland in June, when a stomach virus went through the team. Otherwise, the rotation had impeccable health.

"A lot of it, I think, is just good fortune and good luck," Price said.

Leake went 8-9 with a 4.58 ERA, making him the obvious choice to be left off the playoff roster. When Cueto got hurt Saturday, the Reds told Leake to start preparing to replace him if needed. He left the ballpark on Tuesday night knowing he might start Game 4.

"He knew there was a good chance," Baker said. "He's known for possibly a couple of days, not that he would be pitching but that he was preparing to pitch. He was studying the charts. He was looking at the game. He was in the video room."

Leake faced the Giants once this season, throwing the first complete game of his career for a 5-1 victory at AT&T Park on June 19. He also homered off Matt Cain in that game.

Sarah Brightman will sing at the space station

Follow Sarah Brightman on her journey to Russia's Star City to begin her medical assessment for spaceflight.

By Alan Boyle

Soprano superstar Sarah Brightman?has confirmed that she's planning a flight to the International Space Station and hopes to sing a song in orbit?? but not until after she finishes up the worldwide concert tour that she's just about to start.

We've basically known about Brightman's spaceflight gig since August, but today's news conference in Moscow gave the British singer a chance to talk about the multimillion-dollar orbital tour. She told reporters that she's had an "incredible desire" to go into outer space since childhood. In fact, seeing the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969 "actually inspired me and gave me the courage to go into the career that I have," the 52-year-old said.

Brightman started out as a disco singer in the late '70s with spacey tunes such as?"I Lost My Heart to a Starship Trooper"?and?"Love in a UFO,"?but she really made her mark in the?Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals "Cats" and "Phantom of the Opera." She was even married to the impresario for a time. Since then, she's had a successful solo career, specializing in the classical crossover genre.

Today's briefing put heavy emphasis on the "Dreamchaser" album and concert tour that's scheduled to hit early next year, as well as Brightman's role as a UNESCO Artist for Peace ambassador.

"I don't think of myself as a dreamer ? rather, I am a dream chaser," Brightman said.?"I hope that I can encourage others to take inspiration from my journey both to chase down their own dreams and to help fulfill the important UNESCO mandate to promote peace and sustainable development on Earth and from space. I am determined that this journey can reach out to be a force for good, a catalyst for some of the dreams and aims of others that resonate with me."

SarahBrightman.com via YouTube

Singer Sarah Brightman gives a thumbs-up sign during one of her medical tests in Russia, conducted in preparation for spaceflight.

She emphasized that although she's received medical approval from the Russians for a flight aboard a Soyuz craft to the space station, she won't be able to follow through with the six-month spaceflight training course at Russia's Star City facility until after the 2013 concert tour is over.

SpaceAdventures / SarahBrightman.com

Singer Sarah Brightman is about to embark on a "Dreamchaser" concert tour.

She's got plenty of time: Brightman probably won't be able to catch a ride to the station until 2015, when the space station's partners are planning to have astronauts begin a yearlong stay in orbit. Because of the logistics for that extended mission, there'll be an extra seat on an outbound and inbound Soyuz that a paying passenger can fill.

Like the eight other private space tours that have gone to the station over the past 11 years, Brightman's 10-day space odyssey is being arranged through Virginia-based Space Adventures. (One space traveler, software billionaire Charles Simonyi, has gone twice?? which would make Brightman the eighth paying guest to visit the space station. She's the second woman to do so, after Iranian-American entrepreneur Anousheh Ansari.)

Space Adventures' chairman, Eric Anderson, said the financial arrangements for the tour were confidential. However, the going rate for trips to the space station has risen to roughly $50 million. Considering that Brightman's net worth has been estimated at less than that, it's possible that at least part of the fare is being paid by her promoters.

Brightman also has purchased a seat on Virgin Galactic's suborbital SpaceShipTwo rocket plane, at a cost of $200,000, and she's supporting a science-themed Galactic Unite Brightman scholarship program as well. SpaceShipTwo is expected to begin commercial service in the 2013-2014 time frame.?

In the months ahead, Brightman said she would work with UNESCO to develop a program to promote the conservation of Earth's resources, as well as education for girls in science and engineering. She said she expected there would be a "chain of events" tying in to the program, including concerts, multimedia experiences and a "song from space."

Space Adventures said she would continue her U.N. work after the space mission, through a series of "Space to Place"concerts at UNESCO World Heritage Sites, biosphere reserves and parks.?

UNESCO's director of public information, Neil Ford, was on hand in Moscow to provide backup for the singer. "How amazing that you're about to realize your own dream and fly into space," he told Brightman. Ford said one of UNESCO's goals for the project was to put "science to use for human ingenuity."

Anderson said Brightman was an attractive candidate for a space station trip in part because of her high profile as the world's best-selling soprano.?"I can think of no better ambassador for the idea of human spaceflight," he said.

Based on Brightman's comments during the question-and-answer session, it could be an entertaining ride. One journalist, for example, asked whether she was concerned about encountering aliens during the trip. "I'd love to be kidnapped by an alien," Brightman quipped.?And when a reference was made to "The Fifth Element," a movie in which the French actress Maiwenn played an alien diva, Brightman answered, "I probably am similar to the diva ? without all the tentacles she had."

Cell receptor research wins Americans chemistry Nobel

STOCKHOLM | Wed Oct 10, 2012 7:10am EDT

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Two American scientists won the 2012 Nobel Prize for chemistry on Wednesday for research into how cells respond to external stimuli that is helping to develop better drugs to fight diseases such as diabetes, cancer and depression.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said the 8 million crown ($1.2 million) prize went to Robert Lefkowitz, 69, and Brian Kobilka, 57, for discovering the inner workings of G-protein-coupled receptors, which allow cells to respond to chemical messages such as adrenaline rushes.

"Around half of all medications act through these receptors, among them beta blockers, antihistamines and various kinds of psychiatric medications," the committee said.

Working out better ways to target the receptors, known as GPCRs, is an area of keen focus for pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.

Lefkowitz told a news conference by telephone he was asleep when the phone call came from Sweden.

"I did not hear it - I must share with you that I wear earplugs to sleep. So my wife gave me an elbow. So there it was, a total shock and surprise," he said.

Sven Lidin, Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at Lund University and chairman of the committee, told a news conference the discovery had been key in medical research.

"Knowing what they (the receptors) look like and how they function will provide us with the tools to make better drugs with fewer side effects," he added.

GPCRs are linked to a wide range of diseases, since they play a central role in many biological functions in the body, but developing new drugs to target them accurately has been difficult because of a lack of fundamental understanding as to how they function. Experts say the work of the Nobel Prize winners has opened the door to making better medicines.

Drugs targeting GPCRs have potential in treating illnesses involving the central nervous system, heart conditions, inflammation and metabolic disorders.

Mark Downs, chief executive of Britain's Society of Biology, said the researchers had covered important ground in more than one discipline.

"This ground-breaking work spanning genetics and biochemistry has laid the basis for much of our understanding of modern pharmacology as well as how cells in different parts of living organisms can react differently to external stimulation," he said in a statement.

Johan Aqvist, Professor of Chemistry at Sweden's Uppsala University, said Lefkowitz was "the father of this entire field".

"Out of the roughly 1,400 drugs that exist in the world, about 1,000 of them are little pills that you consume, and the majority of these are based in these receptors," he told Reuters.

Chemistry was the third of this year's Nobel prizes. Prizes for achievements in science, literature and peace were first awarded in 1901 in accordance with the will of dynamite inventor and businessman Alfred Nobel. ($1 = 6.6125 Swedish crowns)

In these upside down days of pre-manufactured "stars and starlets", who inexplicably gain fame for bad behavior, it's difficult for a young person to find quality role models in today's entertainment world.

A quick internet scan of the daily news inevitably brings multiple stories of terrible behavior by reality stars and music personalities. ?A quick scan of the songs currently being marketed as popular music inevitably leaves the listener's ears filled with obscenities and tales of debauchery.

Cimorelli, the marvelous sextet?of singing sisters, is staking their claim to Pop Music Royalty by doing all the right things. ?Raised in a loving two-parent home, this family group solidly stands ready to conquer the world by using their natural God-given talents to achieve success. ?Their wholesome approach to entertaining an audience is a quality that has been sorely lacking in the music business.

There is nothing pre-manufactured here...they are really talented, they are really dedicated, they are really grounded, and they are really sisters.

Cimorelli will win over the world the old fashioned way...by being real.

On my final day of Cimorelli Week, I am thrilled to present:

Christina Cimorelli!

Christina, as you grow more popular by the minute, what's the hardest thing about being a "Cimorelli"?

? - For me, it's probably the lack of a normal routine and schedule in my life. ?I am a very organized person and I love to have a schedule days, weeks, months in advance. ?With our career, though, that's impossible. ?I don't know what I'm doing tomorrow. ?It could change this afternoon!

What's the most surprising thing to happen to you since the 'THE CIMFAM EP' was released?

? - Getting nominated for Teen Choice Award! ?That was so insane.

You all make it look so easy to perform in front of the camera. ?Is it as easy for you to perform in front of a live audience?

? - Live audience is very easy for us because we've done years of theatre!

Any advice to overcoming stage fright?

? - My advice to people with stage fright is to do lots of theatre and perform as much as you possibly can even if you're terrified because it gets SO much easier each time! ?I used to be so scared and nervous and shy onstage but through my experience, I've become very comfortable. ?Also, PRACTICE. ?Practice, practice, practice! ?The more you practice, the more comfortable you will feel when you perform. ?Prepared = Confident.

On your approach to songwriting, you've said to "trust your instincts." ?Who else do you look to for honest feedback and direction when crafting an original song?

? - Whenever I finish a song, I show as many friends as possible. ?I love to see how they react to it and what really touches them. ?However, I really try to write things I like. ?If I write for others, it never turns out as genuine as I want. ?My best songs are the ones I just write for fun!

Outside of your family, who would you love to collaborate with?

? - Two people I would love to write with are Dr. Luke and also Max Martin. ?I think a Cimorelli collaboration with Diggy would be cool! ?Also, one with someone like Drake!

What's the most fun you've ever had with Lauren?

? - Probably every year on our birthday! ?We share a birthday, and it's in August, so it's always super summery and fun, and we always have a BLAST!

THANKS Christina!
It's hard to believe that you were ever shy on a stage, so your advice is wonderful.

Well readers...that concludes Cimorelli Week here on RealLifeHusband.com and I want to thank everyone that has stopped by to show your love. ?It has been a blast!
Please follow Christina on Twitter @ChristinaCim

THANKS CIM FAM! ?Your dedication to this group is an absolute joy!

THANKS CIMORELLI! ?I wish you wild success and I hope you always enjoy the ride.
Keep going and keep smiling...

I leave you all with a cool video of a song written by Christina and Lauren featuring the entire family! ?From 2008, here's the ridiculously catchy 'Delaney'...
