Modeling biological systems can provide key insights for scientists and medical researchers, but periodic cycles that repeat themselves so-called oscillatory systems pose some key challenges. Researchers at North Carolina State University have developed a new method for estimating the parameters used in such models which may advance modeling in research areas ranging from cancer to fertility.

"These oscillatory systems are found in everything from mechanisms in cells that allow a cell to replicate itself to the sleep-wake cycle in mammals," says Dr. Cranos Williams, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at NC State and co-author of a paper describing the work. "The method we've developed should expedite the development of more accurate parameters, which can be used to create more precise and predictable models of oscillatory biological systems." Understanding such oscillatory systems is important for research into cancer, cardiac health, fertility and many other fields, he adds.

Modeling a biological system relies, in part, on defining parameters for that system, which correspond to how the system functions under normal conditions. Once those parameters are established, they can be used to create a model to predict the system's response under different conditions.

To estimate parameters in simpler systems, researchers measure the concentration of the system's components. In a cell, for example, researchers would measure the concentration of its proteins, among other things. Researchers then try to identify the parameters that would result in the closest 'fit' to those concentrations when plugged into the model.

A measure known as an objective function is used to quantify the quality of the 'fit' to the measured concentrations. Simple systems often result in an objective function that looks like a bowl, with the lowest point of the bowl corresponding to the parameters that provide the best or "optimal" fit. All other parameter values correspond to higher points that arc up from the bottom of the bowl. These points correspond to increasingly poor matches to the measured component concentrations as you move further away from the bottom. Robust optimization routines are well adapted to sliding down the sides of these mathematical bowls to identify a functional set of parameters corresponding to the best fit. It can be virtually impossible to identify the optimal set of parameters, but you can often get very close.

But the cyclical nature of oscillatory systems makes it difficult to identify this functional set of parameters, even when using the most robust optimization routines. This is because the repetitive nature of these systems transforms the bowl into something that looks more like a mountain range, with many hills and valleys. This makes it more complicated and time-consuming to work your way toward accurate parameters.

Since these oscillatory systems present a problem for most optimization algorithms, Williams and NC State Ph.D. student Seyedbehzad Nabavi focused on developing methods that would manipulate the surface characteristics of the objective function itself. This new approach factors in the frequency of the concentrations within the system or how often each concentration is repeated to generate a new objective function that mitigates the impact of system oscillations.

"By generating a new objective function that factors in the frequency of the system oscillations, we are able to eliminate many of the hills and valleys, resulting in a surface with the same optimal point, but that is easier to search," Williams says. "This makes it easier for optimization routines to identify a functional working set of parameters that can then be used to predict the activity of the modeled system."

The paper, "A Novel Cost Function for Parameters Estimation in Oscillatory Biochemical Systems," will be presented at the IEEE SoutheastCon in Orlando, Fla., March 15-18. Nabavi is lead author on the paper.

?Stretch IRAs? in The Taxman's Crosshairs - Law Office of Robert ...

For all the bills, budget proposals, and political fury raging over Capitol Hill these days, it?s strange to think that one of the more far-reaching changes may come from a funding proposal for a transportation bill. That?s right, but it?s a big transportation bill. As Reuters reported here, the Senate Finance Committee has been considering action that would severely limit inherited IRA?s.

A lot of people stash fairly large sums into their nest-egg accounts and work to keep that money safe. They do this rather than spend it because, in the worst case, tax-advantaged dollars would be nice in a pinch. In the best case it offers a fairly convenient way of giving excess assets to your heirs at a tax advantage.

There are a number of rules in that regard that I?ve discussed here in the past, but in short, heirs generally have the choice between taking a lump sum or stretching out the withdrawal in a pattern similar to required minimum withdrawals (RMDs). The latter alternative, called a ?stretch? IRA, is on the chopping block.

The proposal would limit the life of such ?stretch? IRAs by placing a five year limit on liquidations of such accounts. It?s ?financing? to the Senate because that forces an awful lot of money to be taken out and taxed within a short time span. It?s financial security for the inheriting taxpayer, on the other hand, but this proposal would limit the ultimate potential of these accounts to accrue over time and then limit the leeway of the inheritor to have even withdrawals over a longer period.

It might not go anywhere. Regardless, keep your eyes on this because it?s made its way to the table and therefore we might see it reappear into any number of budget discussions.

Unfortunately, too, in order to make it work Congress would grandfather old IRAs into it, so that means an awful lot of inheritors have something to think about for the future. Read more in the original article, and others like it.

Ross hit two of Boston's five homers in 25-0 win

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:09 p.m. ET March 3, 2012

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) - Bobby Valentine is using every opportunity this spring to help rid the Red Sox of the memory of their September collapse. He's banned alcohol in the clubhouse, tweaked the rival New York Yankees and now, in their exhibition opener, he's let his ballclub loose - against a college team.

Red Sox 25, Northeastern 0.

Cody Ross connected twice and Adrian Gonzalez hit one of Boston's five homers as a star-laden lineup roughed up Northeastern in the first game of a college doubleheader Saturday. The Red Sox host Boston College in the nightcap.

"Discount the competition, but it's better to do good than to do bad," Valentine said. "I was pleased, obviously. How can you not be pleased?"

His players gave him a lot to be pleased about. Every one of the Red Sox 15 positions players had at least one hit in the seven-inning game. Ryan Sweeney hit a three-run shot and went with three runs scored and five RBI.

"(Red Sox batting coach) Dave Magadan's been working with Ryan on getting a little rhythm at the plate rather than being still and he checked that," Valentine said. "He had a little more of that rhythm to it. The last at-bat (when he hit the home run) he was tired. There's no doubt. And in order to get something out of it he had to kick it up another gear, and he had more rhythm and it was a great swing."

Ross, who joined the team as a free agent in January, had a solo shot to lead off the second inning and a grand slam in the fourth.

"It was good," Ross said. "It's one of those days where you just want to go out and get the cobwebs dusted off. Just as a team go out and try not to get hurt, just play the game, and we played well today."

For Ross, a right-handed hitter, both his home runs cleared the replica Green Monster in the Red Sox spring training park.

"Any time you swing the bat well, whether it's Little League or if it's against college pitching or major league pitching if feels good," Ross said.

Gonzalez hit a three-run shot in the second inning. Che-Hsuan Lin added a two-run homer in the fourth.

Left-hander Jon Lester started for the Red Sox, going two innings. He gave one hit with two strikeouts and threw 22 pitches, 16 for strikes.

Right-hander Justin Germano went two innings, giving up one hit with one strikeout.

Right-hander Michael Bowden pitched two innings with three strikeouts. Right-hander Matt Albers pitched the final innings, giving up a hit with two strikeouts.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The stock market reached a couple of milestones this week ? Dow 13,000 and Nasdaq 3,000 ? but not much else.

Stocks crept lower Friday, and the Dow Jones industrial average turned in its third losing week of the year. One of the few bright spots was Yelp, the online restaurant review site, which surged 64 percent in its debut. Yelp ended its first trading day at $24.58, far above its initial public offering price of $15.

The Dow slipped 2.73 points to close at 12,977.57, and lost 5 points for the week. American Express Co. dropped 1 percent, the biggest fall among the 30 companies in the Dow.

The Nasdaq composite index fell 12.78 points to 2,976.19, a loss of 0.4 percent.

Both the Dow and Nasdaq fell below highs hit earlier this week. The Dow ended the trading day above 13,000 on Tuesday for the first time since May 2008. The Nasdaq composite index broke the 3,000 level on Wednesday for the first time since 2000.

These round numbers mean little to professional investors, said Brad Sorensen, director of market and sector analysis at Charles Schwab. But the media attention they generate may lure Americans back into the stock market, he said, and their savings could push indexes even higher.

"We're a little more surprised there isn't more enthusiasm given the run we've had over the last couple of months," Sorensen said. "The individual retail investor has been reluctant to participate, but we're looking to them to fuel the next leg of this rally."

The Standard & Poor's 500 index gained 8.6 percent in the first two months of this year, its best start since 1987. But Americans still pulled a total of $3.9 billion from U.S. stock funds over those two months, according to data from the Investment Company Institute. Most of their savings are going into taxable bond funds.

Douglas Cote, chief market strategist at ING Investment Management, has been telling his clients to shift more money into stocks and corporate bonds as the U.S. economy improves and the greatest threats are fading away. The European Central Bank loaned $712 billion to the region's struggling banks at cheap rates this week, a move Cote believes will keep the European debt crisis from boiling over.

"It takes the European debt crisis off the table," he said. "We've been counseling investors that it's time to get back in the market."

In other trading Friday, the broader S&P 500 index fell 4.46 points to 1,369.63.

Sara Lee Corp. had the biggest gain in the index, up 7 percent, following news that its shareholders will get up to $4.5 billion in stock when the company spins off its international coffee and tea business later this year.

Oil fell $2.14 to $106.70 a barrel after Iranian media reported an explosion at a Saudi Arabia pipeline. Saudi Arabia denied the report. The drop clobbered oil and gas stocks. Peabody Energy fell 6.5 percent, the most in the S&P 500. Alpha Natural Resources was close behind, losing 5.7 percent.

Among other stocks making big moves:

? Trading in Wynn Resorts Ltd. was briefly halted after a regulatory filing was mistakenly made. The erroneous report said Wynn had made progress on a new resort in Macau, a gambling hub. Wynn Resorts still gained 4.3 percent.

? Big Lots Inc. fell 4 percent after the discount retail company lowered its earnings guidance below analysts' forecasts.

? Genesco Inc. gained 4.3 percent. The clothing company raised its 2013 earnings outlook above analysts' estimates. Genesco also reported quarterly earnings that topped expectations.

? CVR Energy Inc. lost 2 percent after the Texas oil refiner rejected a $2.6 billion hostile takeover bid from the billionaire investor Carl Icahn.

Jennifer Lopez in V: A Foxy Boxer!

Jennifer Lopez may have flashed a nipple while presenting at the Oscars.

But, in the latest issue of V, the singer/dancer/actress/American Idol judge makes sure not to expose any other private parts: she's donning a protective cup over her crotch.

Jennifer Lopez V Magazine CoverJennifer Lopez in V

Why? Lopez tells the magazine she "thought it was more graphic," while going on to explain how boxing is a parallel to her life:

"I've always felt like a tough girl from the Bronx, but I have a soft core," Lopez says. "I can take a lot of punches and still keep going. I've been trained like a boxer to go 15 rounds."

And she's certainly been through a lot recently, of course, as Jennifer's divorce from Marc Anthony made headlines for weeks.

"We’re parents and friends first. That will be the thread that ties us together," she tells the publication of her ex. "I don’t know if people expect it to be negative just because the relationship didn’t work out.”

Lopez has been married three times now and has also seen a couple albums and movies go bust. But she tries to take each failure in stride.

“You’re not going to hit the target or the bull’s-eye every time. That’s part of it. At the end of the day, I made those choices. I’ve been in the business now, I don’t want to say how many years. You have amazing moments of recognition and success. But at this point in my life, I try to take it all with a grain of salt.”
