Whitetip sharks travel amazing distances

Lance Jordan, Microwave Telemetry Inc.

Whitetip sharks, once one of the most abundant apex predators on the planet, have become critically endangered in parts of the Atlantic ocean because of overfishing.

By Tia Ghose
LiveScience

Whitetip sharks may travel up to 1,200 miles (1,931 kilometers) during jaunts from their homes in the Bahamas, according to new research.

The data, which came from tracking sharks with satellite tags, revealed that the fish routinely cross international boundaries, which could make country-based conservation programs less effective.

"Although these sharks are relatively safe from fishing in Bahamian waters, our study shows their long-range roaming takes them across the boundaries of different countries and into the high seas where they still encounter fishing gear set for other species," said study author Demian Chapman, a marine biologist at Stony Brook University, in a statement.

The findings were published online Wednesday?in the journal PLOS ONE.

Critically endangered
Little is known about the elusive whitetip sharks, because they spend a lot of time out in the open ocean. Though these top predators once filled the oceans, because of overfishing the sharks are now listed as a critically endangered species in the Northwest Atlantic and Western Central Atlantic Oceans, and vulnerable around the world by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. [On the Brink: A Gallery of Wild Sharks]

To track the sharks' roaming patterns, Chapman and his colleagues attached pop-up satellite tags to 10 female sharks and one male shark off Cat Island in the Bahamas.

Phil Sokol

Researchers discovered the whitetip sharks' long distance travels by attaching satellite trackers to the predators.

The tags tracked 245 days of the sharks' adventures, recording water temperature, depth and location data. Afterward, the tags detached automatically and sent their data to satellites.

Long-distance travelers
While three of the sharks kept close to the Bahamas area for the entire duration of the study, another five roamed far outside the Bahamas' jurisdiction, with one making it as far as Bermuda. Overall, the sharks spent more than two-thirds of their time around the Bahamas.

In addition, the tags revealed that these sea creatures made deep dives of around 3,280 feet (1,000 meters).

The sharks' long-distance voyages suggest that conservation efforts for the sharks could be more global in scope. The Bahamas bans fishing of the sharks in its surrounding waters, but other countries have no such bans.

"If we want to continue to see these animals in our oceans, fishing nations will have to work together to protect this species, and monitoring of trade and enforcement measures will need to be coordinated on an international level," Chapman said in a statement.

Bionic arm lets user feel their mechanical fingertips

A new prosthetic arm has been developed by a researcher in Switzerland that not only provides the user with a working limb, but also lets them feel rudimentary sensations from the hand and fingers. It's being tested out on an anonymous patient later this year.

The artificial limb was designed by Dr. Silvestro Micera at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne in Switzerland. It works by tapping directly into the median and ulnar nerves in the arm, allowing signals from the brain to reach the limb ? and vice versa. The latest developments are described in a press release (PDF) issued earlier this week.

This two-way connection lets the limb be controlled directly by the brain's motor signals instead of indirectly, through muscles in the arm or other means. But perhaps more importantly, it allows the limb to send feedback to the brain, giving crude but functional sensation in the limb.

Micera has been working on tactile prosthetics for years; in 2009, a prototype of the current design was tested on another man, but the feedback was very limited, both in location and type. It could only send a certain single sensation, from one of two locations ? a far cry from a real hand's range of tactile experience.

The new limb will have "sensory zones" in the wrist, palm, and every fingertip, and could eventually send more than one type of feeling: For example, the fingertips could register pressure, but the wrist could send a signal indicating its position ? a sense known as proprioception.

Being able to actually sense the position and grip pressure, rather than observing it second-hand, could be a huge step in making the limb acceptable to whoever is using it.

It's not without challenges: The neural connection requires a implant that can only be left in for up to a month at a time. There are plans to improve this, among other aspects, but it will likely take at least two years before the limb is ready for thorough testing, Micera told The Independent. For now, he and his team are collaborating with the Italian Ministry of Health to do this initial clinical trial.

Micera's work was presented at the 2013 meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Boston. More work from the Translational Neural Engineering lab, which is working on the new prosthesis, can be found at this website.

Porch Repainting - DIY Home Improvement, Remodeling & Repair ...

The porch needs to be repainted on my house. It is stable and sturdy.

The north facing porch shown gets quite a bit of sunlight in summer, and moisture year-round.

It doesn't look like it was very well prepped or primed when it was painted (assumed to be about 10 years ago). Aside from cleaning, sanding and prepping, are there any other issues I should be aware of as well as paint brands to recommend/avoid?

Thanks!

Office Depot in $1.2 billion deal to buy rival OfficeMax

(Reuters) - Office Depot Inc will acquire smaller rival OfficeMax Inc in a $1.2 billion all-stock deal, the companies said on Wednesday, confirming an agreement inadvertently announced earlier in the day, before it was completed.

The combined entity's name, headquarters location and CEO are all still undetermined, suggesting the companies were in a rush to get the deal confirmed after a draft accidentally went up on Office Depot's website.

Office Depot Chief Executive Officer Neil Austrian and OfficeMax CEO Ravi Saligram are both candidates for the top job, the companies said in a statement.

A source familiar with the situation said earlier on Wednesday that the deal was not yet completed when the statement was posted. News of the early release first broke around 7:30 a.m. EST (1230 GMT), but the confirmation did not come until about two hours later.

In a presentation to analysts, Austrian said the company's webcast provider inadvertently issued the press release "way ahead" of schedule Wednesday morning.

The error was reminiscent of Google's accidental earnings release last year, when a premature regulatory filing included a copy of the still-incomplete statement with the phrase "Pending Larry Quote" where CEO Larry Page's comment was supposed to go.

OFFICEMAX TRADES ABOVE BID

Office Depot insisted the deal was a merger of equals and not an acquisition, although its shareholders would get the larger part of the combined company.

The agreement calls for the exchange of 2.69 Office Depot common shares for each OfficeMax share. At Tuesday's closing prices, the transaction would be valued at $1.17 billion, based on 86.7 million shares outstanding as of October 26.

Office Depot executives said their shareholders would own 51 percent of the combined entity, and OfficeMax shareholders would own 44 percent. Office Depot preferred shareholder BC Partners would own 5 percent, assuming it follows through on a plan to convert some of its preferred stock to common shares.

Office Depot and OfficeMax will have equal representation on the combined entity's board, however.

Office Depot shares fell 13.7 percent to $4.33 in midday trading, while OfficeMax was down 4.1 percent at $12.45. At those prices, OfficeMax was trading above the value of the bid.

It was not immediately clear whether the offer was enough to satisfy one of OfficeMax's largest shareholders, Neuberger Berman, which said earlier this week that it would support a deal depending on the terms.

One of the firm's key demands was that OfficeMax pay out a special dividend to shareholders. Under the terms announced Wednesday, OfficeMax would be able to pay cash dividends of up to $1.50 per share before the deal closed.

J.P. Morgan was financial adviser to OfficeMax, and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP and Dechert LLP were legal advisers. Peter J. Solomon Co and Morgan Stanley were financial advisers to Office Depot's board. Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP was legal adviser to Office Depot, and Kirkland & Ellis was legal adviser to its board. Perella Weinberg Partners also acted as financial advisers to the transaction committee of Office Depot's board.

FALLING DEMAND

The two sides may have to address antitrust questions. Analysts say they expect less pushback from authorities for this deal than what Office Depot faced in the 1990s, when it tried to merge with Staples, given the changes in the office supply market since then.

OfficeMax's Saligram said the "marketplace had changed sufficiently" for the deal to pass muster.

But of seven antitrust experts polled by Reuters this week, six said they either expected a challenge by regulators or that it was still too close to call.

Office supply retailers, often seen as a barometer of economic health, have suffered as demand for their products fell after the recent U.S. recession. They also face strong competition from Amazon.com Inc and Wal-Mart Stores Inc in selling everything from pens and notebooks to furniture to government, businesses and individuals.

Office Depot and OfficeMax said combining would help them compete better with online retailers and warehouse clubs, among others. They expect the deal to yield annual cost savings of $400 million to $600 million within three years after its anticipated closing by the end of 2013.

"By combining our two businesses, we create a stronger, more efficient competitor able to meet the growing challenges of a rapidly changing industry," Austrian said.

Wall Street has clamored for this agreement, saying the office supply sector is ripe for consolidation. BB&T Capital Markets analyst Anthony Chukumba said the Office Depot-OfficeMax combination would help larger rival Staples, too.

"Clearly, you can't make this deal work unless you close a bunch of stores," he said. "Store rationalization is long overdue, and Staples will clearly benefit from just having fewer stores to compete with."

Staples has 39.9 percent of the U.S. office supply market, Office Depot 19.2 percent and OfficeMax holds 15.7 percent, according to Euromonitor International.

WEAK RESULTS

Both companies also reported fourth-quarter results Wednesday, figures that helped make analysts' point about the need for consolidation in the sector.

OfficeMax said sales fell 7 percent in the quarter and would decline in the first quarter as well. It also forecast slightly lower operating margins for this quarter.

Excluding special items, the company broke even in the fourth quarter, while analysts were expecting a profit of 4 cents per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Office Depot reported a 12 percent decline in sales, which missed Wall Street expectations. Earnings of 16 cents a share before special items beat the analysts' forecast by 1 cent.

"It's a tough business," said B. Riley Caris analyst R. Scott Tilghman.

MilitaryRecords.us.org To Track Active Duty Status Of Reservists

Reports to include information beyond current members of the armed services.

San Diego, CA (PRWEB) February 20, 2013

MilitaryRecords.us.org is going to start including the active duty status of members of the Army, Navy and Air Force reserves as part of their public records search packages, company officials said yesterday.

Until now, the records provided by the company were focused on members of the traditional armed forces and not on the status of reservists, the company said. The database expansion is the result of reserve units having been involved in various tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The move serves two purposes, the company said: It will give reserve unit members who have seen combat the same status as full-time members of the military, and it will allow employers who are considering hiring reservists the chance to check their status as combat veterans.

It will also allow reservists themselves the chance to verify that their own military records are accurate and up to date, the company said.

Including the records means that the company has had to add additional servers and bring on temporary IT staff in order to update the database, the company said. It took roughly three week to incorporate the new information into the database. Information will also be updated when a service member completes his or her tour of duty in the regular armed forces yet maintains reserve status.

About MilitaryRecords.us.org:

MilitaryRecords.us.org is a database that provides service members, families, and more with access to military records and other public records in minutes. From family military history research to a veteran checking their own record, the MilitaryRecords.us.org database can find all information available.
