One Tough Mother: New Year's Resolutions for 2013

I've always loved American Eagle's slogan, "Live Your Life". ?Kaiser Permanente has a good one, too: "Live well. ?Be well. Thrive."

Unfortunately, I think most of us spend our days going through the motions, and not truly living.

According to Dictionary.com, the definition of living?is as follows: ?active or thriving; vigorous; strong; burning or glowing, as a coal; flowing freely, as water.

Are you living? ?Or are you just alive?

In 2012, I chose a word to focus on. ?That word was strength. ?I had never focused on a word for an entire year before, and wasn't sure what would transpire. ?The truth is, that word, and the attributes associated with it, kept popping up into my day-to-day life. ?We went through our trials and tribulations as a family, and I had to muster the strength to get through them all. ?I faced an impossible foe and had to have the strength to not only forgive, but ask for forgiveness. ?And now, I'm having to summon the strength to not send my only child away to boot camp at age 10 because she is starting the hormonal "tween" phase way too soon!

{I digress.}

I bet you can guess my word for 2013.

Live.

Simple. ?Profound.

I've broken my word down into three subcategories that I will focus on throughout the year. ?All of these three subcategories will help me live a better, fuller, and happier life.

Life has a tendency to get out of control from time to time if we allow it. ?One of my goals for 2013 is to simplify my life.
  • Enjoy more quiet time with my Savior - something I've been pushing aside lately.
  • Organize the hot spots at home in order to calm my OCD brain and get a good night's sleep.
  • Delegate more; worry less - I will assign chores to both my husband and my daughter and NOT go behind them to re-do what they've done.
  • Say "no" to those random tasks that pop up that I know I have no time or energy for, but always feel guilty for not helping with.
When I am old, I want to be able to sit in my rocking chair and remember a life well lived, full of adventures, colorful stories, and wonderful people. ?Right now, when I think of my life, I see work-dinner-chores-bed-wash-rinse-repeat...
  • Each month in 2013, I will try something I have never done before. ?It doesn't have to be anything huge or spectacular, just new. ?I'm working on a list - a few things I have include:
    • Shoot and own a gun (not a pink one, either - something tough).
    • Fly to NYC for the weekend with my mom and see a Broadway play.
    • Go camping on Cumberland Island with my husband and daughter and see the wild horses run
    • Take my hubby to a Red Wings game at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit
  • I will make play time a priority this year - whether it's hiking or kayaking on the weekends in North Georgia with the family, or simply throwing a football around with my husband in the front yard, I will play.
I'm a huge fan of crafting and organizing. ?The problem is, I have so many ideas that I never actually attempt - out of fear, perhaps, or lack of know-how, or sometimes just plain laziness.
  • One way to help me create more in 2013 is by hosting a monthly linky party - Mission: Monthly Medium. ?This will be a way for me to experiment with new craft supplies and mediums, learn new tricks, and create something I would have only pinned on Pinterest before.
  • Creating isn't only about crafting. ?We create memories. ?We create family time. ?We create meals.
    • Create memories: Every Friday or Saturday night will be date night - alternating between date night with just my husband and myself, and family date night with our daughter. ?She splits her time between our house and her dad's house, so when she's with her dad, hubs and I have a quiet night to ourselves. ?When she's with us, we'll have family game/movie night.
    • Create deeper relationships: I recently told my husband that I want us, as a family, to read the Bible together every night. ?Dinner time is the perfect time for this, so we'll be using a 365-family devotion book at dinner.
    • Create a method to the madness: This ties in with my goal of simplifying. ?Room by room, I will create a more organized space in our home and a system to help us live a simpler life. ?We will purge, sort, and organize...then we can participate?more fully on our lives!
I'm very excited about 2013 and all it has to offer. ?I hope you'll join me on my journey as I share my adventures throughout the year.

What are your resolutions for 2013?

Football finance probe derails Cottonwood High gravy train | The ...

(Tribune file photo) The sunsets over Cottonwood's football field in this photo from 2008.

Prep football ? School board?s new rules spur Cottonwood benefactor to cut off his support, hobbling the program.

Before the Philadelphia Eagles drafted him, Stanley Havili was a Salt Lake City kid with shaky prospects.

His first semester at East High, Havili earned only a 0.7 grade point average. Some of his friends joined gangs and went to jail. Others wound up dead.

But Havili realized his potential as a standout athlete at Cottonwood High, a school with a football program amped up by millions of dollars donated by benefactor Scott Cate. Havili went on to earn a scholarship to the University of Southern California before joining the NFL in 2011, an achievement he credits to Cate.

"I?m pretty sure I?d probably be working at the airport throwing bags on a plane if it wasn?t for him," said the 6-foot, 245-pound Havili, his voice breaking with emotion during a Granite District School Board meeting in July. "But now I have the opportunity to provide for my family doing something I love."

For more than a decade, hundreds of teenagers such as Havili benefited from Cate?s passion for football and his deep pockets before all that slammed to a sudden stop this summer amid questions about football-program finances at Cottonwood in Murray and other Utah high schools.

What started late last year as a probe into Timpview High School?s team grew into a statewide investigation. The review lifted the veil on sloppy financial practices within a number of Utah programs including Cottonwood?s, where Cate was allowed to donate more than $3 million with little documentation.

In an attempt to clean up Cottonwood?s finances, the Granite board passed a new donations policy that, among others things, prohibits big-time donors such as Cate from coaching. Insulted, Cate withdrew his support for the program.

"This is ridiculous. He helped the community," Havili?s father, Tevita Havili, told The Salt Lake Tribune. "If it weren?t for Scott, my kids wouldn?t have gotten this far."

But district leaders maintain the policy was long overdue and accept responsibility for years of financial haphazardness.

"This isn?t a recent problem," said district spokesman Ben Horsley. "It?s in relation to following our own policies ensuring state law is adhered to. ... These problems didn?t begin with some of the people we have in place now but they?re going to end with us."

story continues below

?

Poor documentation ? District documents show a number of issues during the past decade concerning the handling of donations. But the records ? obtained by The Tribune through an open records request ? are perhaps more notable for what they don?t show.

In October, Granite sent Cate and his wife a letter thanking them for their donations over the past 13 years. That letter listed $3.25 million worth of donations ? everything from football uniforms to a press box to a new football field. Cate, a former University of Utah quarterback, became wealthy building and selling an international telecommunications company. The last of his children graduated from Cottonwood about three years ago.

But that letter, in most cases, is where the district?s documentation of those donations ends.

The district doesn?t have records of everything Cate donated. Granite also was unable to fulfill a records request from The Tribune for emails between district personnel and Cate during the past decade.

Florida State Seminoles? Bjoern Werner handles his growing celebrity

Few players in the history of Florida State University have captured the hearts and imaginations of Seminoles fans quite like junior defensive end Bjoern Werner.

In just three years the German-born pass-rusher has gone from a highly touted recruit to one of the top NFL prospects in the country.

Werner (pronounced Ver-nurr), has been the subject of memes, has been dubbed ?Von Striker? (complete with an explosive sound-effects package) by Tallahassee sports-talk radio and even has his face plastered along the side of the bus that Florida State is riding around Fort Lauderdale in the days leading up to the Orange Bowl.

In America, specifically in Tallahassee, Werner is something of a pseudo-celebrity. But in his native Germany, Werner still feels he has plenty to accomplish.

?Aside from the 100,000 football players in Germany, nobody knows me,? joked Werner, his accent still plainly noticeable. ?So when I go back I can have some time off.?

That may not be the case for long, though. Werner finished the regular season leading the Atlantic Coast Conference and tied for second in the nation with 13 sacks, including an eye-popping 3.5-sack performance in the Seminoles? regular-season finale against Florida. In three years (two as a starter) he has compiled 23.5 sacks.

Werner is currently rated the top defensive end prospect in 2013 NFL Draft should he opt to leave school early. He has received numerous postseason accolades.

?Getting these honors is just amazing,? Werner mused. ?Especially where I come from ? I?m a German All-American. How awesome is that? I?m just proud to represent my family and my name and all the German football players with that honor.?

NFL dream

Werner has always dreamed of being in the NFL, since he took up football as a young man he has envisioned himself walking across the stage at Radio City Music Hall and posing for a picture with the commissioner, NFL jersey in hand.

That dream may not be far from coming to fruition, but so far Werner has been mum on his future plans. While conventional wisdom says he?s likely to turn pro, Werner (6-4, 255 pounds) is quick to remind reporters that no matter what he?s thinking today, he can always change his mind.

?I made up my mind, but I don?t want to tell you guys until after the [Orange Bowl] because I want to focus on the bowl game,? Werner said last week. ?... I can change my mind [the] last day. You never want to tell stuff too early.

?Brandon Jenkins last year, I was positive he was going [pro]. The last day Coach Fisher talked to his family, talked about the positives, negatives and he changed his mind. I want to wait until I really know I can make the decision.?

Cautionary tale

Of course, the case of Brandon Jenkins could be what ultimately pushes Werner to forgo his senior year. After turning down a chance to be an early-round pick last year, Jenkins sustained a Lisfranc fracture during the first game of the 2012 season and missed the entire year.

As if that wasn?t enough to scare a guy into taking the money now, Jenkins? replacement Tank Carradine potentially lost first-round money himself when he tore his ACL against UF.

Regardless of when Werner decides to go pro though, his goals do not merely end with making an NFL debut. Coming from Berlin, Werner is keenly aware of the challenges facing German football players trying to make it to the NFL.

?Going that way is so hard, you need people to give you opportunities,? said Werner. ?On my way to this point, so many people in my life have opened doors for me, given me opportunities and I took it. Hopefully I have a nice NFL career and my name is so big that I can start opening the pipeline, hopefully I can give back.?

China backs Cambodia?s first oil refinery

PHNOM PENH:? Cambodia last Friday gave the green light to the CONSTRUCTION [] of its first oil refinery, a multi-billion-dollar Chinese-backed project, as the kingdom looks to tap its untouched offshore reserves.

Cambodia?s oil and gas regulator approved a deal to allow Sinomach China Perfect Machinery Industry Corp and Cambodian Petrochemical Co to jointly invest US$2.3 billion (RM7 billion) in the plant in the southwest of the country.

?We hope that we will have an oil refinery plant that can produce five million tonnes of oil products a year,? Deputy Prime Minister Sok An said during the signing ceremony.

The plant is expected to start operating in late 2015.

Impoverished Cambodia had hoped to begin pumping oil this month from offshore fields, but the start has been delayed indefinitely, according to government officials.

The country was feted as Southeast Asia?s next petro-state after oil was discovered there in 2005, but production stalled amid apparent wrangling between the government and US energy giant Chevron over revenue sharing.

?We have been trying our best to develop the oil sector for years but without results,? Sok An said, adding that the government is still in talks with Chevron.

Cambodia could be sitting on hundreds of millions of barrels of crude and natural gas, according to some estimates, but it remains unclear how much can actually be recovered. ? AFP

Hinting at war crimes charges, UK minister attacks Israel for East Jerusalem construction plans

A British minister on Thursday harshly condemned Israel for its plans to expand construction in East Jerusalem and for conferring university status on a college in the West Bank city of Ariel, employing damning language rarely used by government officials.

While international outcries following Israeli announcements of construction beyond the Green Line are a common occurrence, UK Minister for the Middle East Alistair Burt took the unusual step of mentioning the Geneva Conventions, likely implying that settlement expansion is considered a war crime under international law.

The move is being seen by some as an intensification of rhetoric in response to Israel?s increasingly aggressive avowals to broaden its settlement enterprise.

In his statement, Burt said he and Foreign Secretary William Hague last week expressed ?condemnation and deep disappointment? at the Jerusalem District Planning and Building Committee?s approval of 1,500 housing units in Ramat Shlomo. They also denounced recently announced plans for additional construction in the Givat Hamatos and Gilo neighborhoods, which are beyond the Green Line.

?These are further profoundly provocative actions that run contrary to the Fourth Geneva Convention,? Burt?stated. ?By taking these steps, despite the international community repeatedly raising our profound concerns, the Israeli government is damaging Israel?s international reputation.?

Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention states that an occupying power ?shall not deport or transfer parts of its own civilian population into the territory it occupies.? This is the basis for the position of international bodies, such as the United Nations and the European Union, to consider Israeli settlements beyond the Green Line illegal under international law.

Violations of the 1949 Geneva Convention are considered war crimes under international law. Israel is a party to the convention and therefore bound by its obligations.

According to pro-Israel advocate Irwin Cotler, a former Canadian justice minister and expert on international law,?Burt?s evoking of the Geneva Convention marks a ?gradual ratcheting up? of criticism in light of Israel?s increasingly assertive settlement policy. While international human right activists have in the past quoted the convention to incriminate Israel, Western government officials have generally refrained from mentioning it in relation to Israeli settlements.

?At first the settlements were unhelpful, then they became an obstacle to peace; from there they went to being illegal, from there to being contrary to international law, and now they are violating the Geneva Conventions,? Cotler told The Times of Israel. ?It seems that this signifies a calibrated indictment reciprocal to the increasing affirmations of the Israeli government?s settlement policy.?

Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor called the word choice ?disappointing.?

?The Palestinian interpretation of the applicability of the Fourth Geneva Convention to the West Bank and to settlements therein is highly controversial and stands in contradiction with a great number of legal opinions by leading experts,? Palmor said. ?It is therefore disappointing to see that a [UK Foreign Office] minister should adopt the contested Palestinian position hook, line and sinker, thus adding controversy where it is already in excess.?

In trying to fend off such attacks, Israel usually refers to a clause in the convention that says regulations only apply to ?High Contracting Parties? ? in other words, signatory states. Since the West Bank and East Jerusalem were not within the recognized territory of any contracting party when Israel captured them, they are to be considered disputed territories rather than occupied, Jerusalem argues.

In May, the EU foreign ministers released a statement mentioning ?the applicability of the fourth Geneva Convention relative to the protection of civilians.? This passage seems to refer mostly to Israel?s obligation to safeguard Palestinians living under Israeli military control. On December 10, the EU issued a harshly worded rebuke of Israel?s plans to expand settlements in the West Bank but failed to mention the convention.

Burt, a Conservative, also called on the Israeli government to ?urgently? reverse?its decision to upgrade the Ariel University Center to a full-fledged university. ?Ariel is beyond the Green Line in a settlement that is illegal according to international law. This decision will deepen the presence of the settlements in the Palestinian territories and will create another obstacle to peace,? he said.

The minister further said that the United Kingdom appreciates the Palestinian leadership?s ?measured response? to Israel?s recent announcements and commended Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas for publicly rejecting recent ?inflammatory statements? by Hamas leaders.

Having received nonmember observer state status at the United Nations in late November, the Palestinians are said to be considering turning to the International Criminal Court in The Hague to denounce Israel for alleged war crimes relating to settlements.

However, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other senior government ministers have repeatedly vowed to keep building despite all pressure.

Faulty brakes may be to blame in Russian plane crash

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Faulty brakes may be to blame for a Russian airliner sliding off the runway and smashing onto a highway near Moscow, killing five people, a member of the crash investigation team said on Sunday.

Investigators said they were examining the black boxes to try to determine the cause of Saturday's crash, which cracked the wings off the Tupolev-204 plane and split the fuselage clean into three pieces.

If they find bad brakes were at fault, it would match a warning issued to the state-owned Tupolev by Russia's aviation authority to fix problems with the brakes that may have caused a Tu-204 with 70 people onboard to go off a Siberian runway on December 21.

Any sign that the catastrophe during peak holiday travel could have been avoided will worsen concerns over the country's poor air-safety record, despite President Vladimir Putin's calls to improve controls.

"After landing the pilot uses all the available brake systems on the plane, but for some reason the machine did not stop," a member of the investigation team told the Interfax new agency. "Most likely it was faulty reverse engines or brakes."

A fifth crew member of the Red Wing plane, which was traveling without passengers, died of her injuries in hospital on Sunday, the company said.

Despite icy weather conditions, the plane had been piloted by an experienced crew with many hours of flying under their belt, according to Russia's aviation safety body.

Television footage showed the jet with smoke billowing from the tail end and the cockpit broken clean off after the crash.

A photo showed a crew member, still strapped to a seat, sprawled on the pavement after apparently being hurled far from the plane during its impact with the highway barrier.

Red Wings, whose fleet includes nine of the Soviet-designed Tu-204 jets, said on Sunday it would not retire them from use.

The Russian-built Tu-204, which is comparable in size to a Boeing 757 or Airbus A321, was produced in the mid-1990s but is no longer being made.

Russia and other former Soviet republics had some of the world's worst air-traffic safety records last year, with a total accident rate almost three times the world average, the International Air Transport Association said.

Good News! Another BB&W Engagement! | Beyond Black & White

Good News! Another BB&W Engagement!

I am THRILLED to announce that Shaun Brown has asked his girlfriend, Victoria for her hand in marriage, and she has accepted!

The newly engaged couple, Shaun and Victoria!

I am THRILLED to announce that Shaun Brown has asked his girlfriend, Victoria for her hand in marriage, and she has accepted! If you?ll recall, Shaun Brown is our resident conservative. You can read more here. This is the first interracial relationship for both Shaun and Victoria, and it took a while for both of them to adjust. But their love, common values and devotion to each other overcame it all, and Shaun asked for Victoria?s hand on Christmas.

Here?s what Shaun had to say:

?

Victoria and I have been praying together and separate for about 9 months for God to move in our relationship and guide us.? We both wanted to move our relationship to the next level.? We also wanted to make sure we where ready, and really could be the best person for each other at that next level.? We have been joking about wanting to get married for about a year now.? I knew this time last year that I wanted to be with Victoria for the rest of my life.? I have never loved someone as much as i love her, and my love for her grows each day!? I saved up enough money to buy the ring in February of this year.? This ring has been sitting in my gun case for 11 months.? I had to put it out of sight because i wanted to give her the ring so bad!? We kept praying and discussing the idea of getting married and about 3 weeks ago we both got the same message from God.? Everything is going to be alright.? I had asked God for a sign of when the time would be right.? When Victoria told me the had gotten the feeling and message from God that everything was going to be alright.? I was overjoyed!? God had laid that same message on my spirit just a week or so before that.? Christmas has always been a time people propose, the lights, the smiles, the opening of presents and joy in the air.? It is just a perfect time to share the love you have for someone.? On to the fun part, how I proposed to her.

I got a red box from a close friend that was big enough to put the ring box inside.? This red box had a Santa on top of it to help hide any HINT that it was a engagement ring.? I was able to hide the box INSIDE of the Christmas tree.? It was hard to see from the outside unless you knew to look for it.? After we opened presents on Christmas morning, i told her she had 1 more gift and she had to find it.? Victoria was looking all around the house, and after about 2 minutes i told her it was in the living room.? I kept giving her hints until i said ?Look in the tree?.?? She saw the box and she had this HUGE smile on her face.? She said ?What is it?!?? I told her to let me see the box so i could take the tape off.? We opened the box and i got on one knee in her living room.? According to Victoria i said a bunch of stuff, but all she could remember was ?I love you with all of my heart and i want to spend the rest of my life with you.? Will you marry me??? She said YES!!!!!

We are going to start planning the wedding starting next month.? We are looking at the first weekend in November of 2013, but we have not set a date as of yet.? First we got to get a budget together!!

We want to thank the BB&W community and Chris for your support and encouragement with Interracial relationships.? I hope one day our story will help someone else take that leap of faith and find someone you LOVE, no matter their race, color, creed.? We both are so happy and excited!? Happy New Year!

?

Congrats, Shaun and Victoria!

Chinese Laborer pleads for help in Halloween Decorations

The trouble is many countries (including most of Europe and the US) are no longer in a position where they can avoid goods made in these camps.

If large companies (such as Apple, which is also mentioned in the article) had any motivation to really deal with the issues they now recognise they would simply shift their production into more regulated markets. It isn't as though many of these companies are not charging enough for their products to move them to more reputable manufacturing markets and still make a profit!!!

It would also be, by far, the most effective way to force the Chinese government to protect their workers.

Top 4 New Year's resolutions for your pocketbook

Job seekers stand in line to meet with prospective employers at a career fair in New York City in this October 2012 file photo. If unemployment strikes, it lasts an average of 40 weeks, which is why an emergency fund equal to a year's salary (after taxes) is advisable. (Mike Segar/Reuters/File)

Contrary to what you might think, addressing your emergency fund is a more immediate concern than paying off debt (which is why it?s first on this list). An emergency fund serves as insurance against future financial difficulties by ensuring that unexpected difficulties like job loss won?t lead to financial disaster.
?
No one wants to incur significant credit score damage or find creditors ranging from the family doctor to the electric company calling in search of their cash, so the first step in creating the new financial you is to begin contributing a portion of your take-home pay to a designated account each month. The goal is to amass about a year?s salary (after taxes) in this rainy-day fund so you can withstand a prolonged job search, if need be.

Why a year's worth of emergency money? The average unemployed person is out of work for 40 weeks, according to the most recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Background to Malta
Malta is a Mediterranean Island with remains going back millennia to prehistoric times. UNESCO has placed six of the above ground prehistoric temples on the World Heritage List, some of which are thought to be the oldest free standing buildings in the world. The providential arrival of the Apostle St Paul around 60 AD, introduced Christianity to Malta, and was to help Malta become known as the island of Paul. The attractions of these sites, and the visits paid by visitors throughout time, have led some to describe Malta as the Central Mediterranean holy island. The Knights of the Order of St John tried their best to increase this religious interest in Malta, as they tried to create a pilgrimage route to Malta, by supporting the creation of the cult of St Paul. Today, there are many sites, traditions and legends that are connected with this cult.

The Maltese islands were home to the Religious Military Order of St John (now better known as the Sovereign Military Order of Malta) from 1530 to 1798, and this led to an increase in religious manifestations, especially during the Baroque period. Today, the many parish churches are lavishly decorated, well kept, and a good portion of parishioners are highly involved in the organisation of the annual feast to their patron saint.

The islands of Malta are a veritable showcase of religious traditions.

Nelson Mandela "not yet fully recovered": spokesman

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Former South African President Nelson Mandela is doing well after being discharged from hospital, although he is still not fully recovered, a government spokesman said on Thursday.

"He is not yet fully recovered, but he has sufficiently moved forward so that he can be discharged," Mac Maharaj told local broadcaster eNCA.

"He is sufficiently well to be home."

The 94-year-old anti-apartheid leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday, ending a nearly three-week stay during which he was treated for a lung infection and had surgery to remove gallstones.

Mandela, who has been in frail health for several years, is now receiving care at his suburban Johannesburg home.

Mandela has a history of lung problems dating back to when he contracted tuberculosis while in jail as a political prisoner. He spent 27 years in prison, including 18 years on the windswept Robben Island off Cape Town.

The former president was admitted to a Pretoria hospital on December 8 and this was his longest stay in a hospital since he was released from prison in 1990.

Current President Jacob Zuma visited Mandela on Christmas Day and said the former South African leader was doing much better, making progress and in good spirits.

Mandela was also admitted to a hospital in February because of abdominal pain but released the following day after a keyhole examination showed there was nothing seriously wrong with him.

He has spent most of his time since then in another home in Qunu, his ancestral village in the impoverished Eastern Cape province.

Hack a Raspberry Pi Into an AirPlay Speaker Receiver

Hack a Raspberry Pi Into an AirPlay Speaker ReceiverHack a Raspberry Pi Into an AirPlay Speaker Receiver If you want to get wireless music streaming and AirPlay functionality on your home theater system you have to buy either an Airport Express or Apple TV and then connect it to a stereo. But if you want to DIY it on your own, blogger Jordan Burgess shows off how to make your stereo AirPlay compatible with a Raspberry Pi.

Burgess only wanted the wireless music streaming capability of AirPlay and he didn't care about the video. His solution is a Rasberry Pi and a USB WiFi adaptor. The process itself is really simple. Once you get the WiFi set up, you just need to install a few things to get AirPlay functionality working and add iOS 6 support. Once you're done, you've essentially created a tiny Airport Express where you can send music from your iPhone to your stereo wirelessly. Burgess points out the sound quality isn't fantastic, but it's totally functional and a cheap solution. Head over to Burgess' site for the full guide.

Quick And Easy Personal Finance Tips That Work - Empower Network

This article can help you get started on the road to responsible personal finance. The following tips will help you maintain a stable financial life.

Do not stick with investments just because they have done well for you in the past. If you find that company in which you have invested is not succeeding, you want to get your money back and put it toward a more successful one.

You need to have a highly liquid savings account. It should also be a savings account that is high-yielding. Many of them are only on the internet, but the FDIC still insures them.

Houses require a large up-front investment, but they can save you a lot of money over time when compared to renting. While you will, of course, have to deal with monthly mortgage payments, they will eventually go away and leave you with a home that you own outright. When you rent, your money goes to your landlord, not towards your future financial stability.

If you can, have money deducted from your check that will go directly into savings. An emergency fund could save your home in the event of a job loss or a personal injury. Directly depositing helps to keep the money safe from frivolous expenditures.

Many spend over $20 weekly trying to win a lot of money from a local lottery drawing, when that amount could easily go into a savings account. This will guarantee that you will increase your income over time, instead of throwing your money away.

To ensure timely credit card payments set up an automatic monthly bill pay through your bank. If you pay on credit card bills every month by the due date, you build up a good credit rating even though you are not paying the balances off in full. When the payment is automatically taken out, you will never have a late fee. If you want to pay more each month, you can.

A great way for frequent travelers to be rewarded for their travels is through a frequent flier plan; most airlines offer these programs. Look for credit card companies that offer purchase incentives which you can redeem for discounted airfare. The miles accrued through the frequent flier program can be used for free or discounted hotel rooms.

Most products will come with a warranty, and if they break, they are likely going to break during this time. Usually, extended warranties are of no use to you.

Use a flexible spending account. Flexible spending accounts can help reduce your medical or childcare expenses. Use these accounts to put pretax money aside for medical or similar expenses. However, as there are tricks to using this type of account, it is best to seek clarification from an accountant before entering into one.

Learn how to live without relying on credit cards. Additionally, find ways to avoid paying interest altogether. Pay off or avoid taking out car loans, personal loans, and an unreasonable mortgage. Interest payments can really add up, so minimizing or eliminating them will make it easier to be frugal.

Plan for your taxes so you can get on a better track with personal finance. Think about any investments that you can make through your job that may be a pretax deduction. Set these pre-tax dollars aside for medical expenses. If your employer has a 401K match you should take advantage. You should always utilize your earned income wisely.

Be aggressive about re-working your insurance policies as a way to cut down your monthly payments. You can look into various tips like bundling policies, dropping excessive coverage, etc. These savings could really add up over time.

Avoid ATM fees by using the ATM of your bank. While your cards may work just fine in ATMs that belong to other institutions, they will not hesitate to add finance charges to every transaction you make. These can add up to a significant amount of wasted money.

An easy way to keep your finances on track is to have a written budget. The first of each month, compose a list which describes every expense. Make sure you don?t leave out anything. Add expenses for gas, electricity, food, phones, Internet and your morning Starbucks runs. Don?t forget any of your expenses. Track the amount you actually paid for each expense, and don?t spend money over the amount you committed to in your budget.

Your finances could become a source of pride and security rather than causing you stress. This article can help make the work on your finances a lot easier so that you can make your dreams a reality.

P.S.-If you love the personal finance niche and would love to make an extra $1000/day blogging about your company, find out how our team is helping thousands of people make money about their passions!

Discover why this game-changer is the most bad-ass make money online program in the industry!

White House urges parties in dock dispute to come to terms

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House on Friday urged dock workers, port owners and shippers to resolve a labor dispute that threatens to deteriorate into a strike that could affect 15 ports on the U.S. Atlantic and Gulf coasts.

"Federal mediators are assisting with the negotiations, and we continue to monitor the situation closely and urge the parties to continue their work at the negotiating table to get a deal done as quickly as possible," White House spokesman Matt Lehrich said.

Dock workers, port operators and shippers face a deadline on Saturday for resolving the dispute.

The International Longshoremen's Association, the union representing the dock workers, and the U.S. Maritime Alliance, a group of shippers and port operators, are deadlocked over an employment contract that expired at the end of September but has been extended. The union has said that if the contract expires without a resolution, it could call a strike a day later.

The White House had no comment on whether the president would consider invoking federal law to impose a cooling off period. Florida Governor Rick Scott, a Republican, asked President Obama to invoke the 1947 Taft-Hartley Act, which allows the president to prevent or interrupt a work stoppage.

The law calls for an 80-day cooling off period and mediation.

Django Unchained Is Quentin Tarantino Most Ambitious Film to Date ...

Quentin Tarantino has been Googling himself, and it's starting to become a problem. The filmmaker, whose eighth feature, Django Unchained, opens on Christmas Day, is famously an analog evangelist: He writes his scripts in longhand; he bans cellphones from his sets, and hasn't had one of his own in years; he's claimed that the day the film industry "evolves" and makes it impossible for him to shoot on celluloid will be the day he retires. He's also sworn that the New Beverly Cinema, the Los Angeles revival house that he rescued from certain death in 2010, will continue to project 35 mm film "as long as I'm alive, and as long as I'm rich."

"But I do have an iPad, and I have a lot of fun with it," Tarantino tells me. It's a rainy afternoon in late November, and the 49-year-old former video store clerk is sequestered in the bar at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills, nursing a healthy pour of pinot noir.

But because of that, I found myself Googling Django Unchained, seeing what people are saying, the articles that are out there," he admits. "That's been kind of fun for a while, but now I've got to get out of it. It's hard to not want to do that when you have easy access to that kind of shit. And I've never really had that before, so I'm gonna actually have to get rid of my iPad for a while."

By the time you read this, Django Unchained will have been widely screened for industry members and critics, with some suggesting that Tarantino's latest confection could have used more time in the oven, while others name it one of the best films of the year. But at the time of our interview, almost any "articles that are out there" about Django could only be speculative. Aside from Tarantino's collaborators and confidants, no one has actually seen the movie -- me included. There are few filmmakers I would agree to interview for a cover story without actually having seen their movie first: This year, the list starts and ends with Quentin Tarantino.

Police union seeks more help for Newtown officers

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) ? Some of the police officers who responded to the elementary school shooting in Newtown are so traumatized they haven't been working, but they have to use sick time and could soon be at risk of going without a paycheck, a union official said Wednesday.

The union, Council 15 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, is seeking more generous assistance in talks with the town's insurer. It is also reaching out to lawmakers and the governor's office with proposals to modify state law and expand workers' compensation benefits for officers who witness horrific crime scenes.

"The insurer for the town has taken a position that these officers are entitled to only what the statute allows. Unfortunately for these officers, the statute doesn't allow any benefits," said Eric Brown, an attorney for the union, which represents nearly 4,000 officers around Connecticut.

A gunman shot his way into Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14 and slaughtered 20 first-graders and six educators. The gunman, who had also killed his mother that morning, committed suicide as police arrived.

Brown said that the number of officers "critically affected" by the tragedy is below 15 and that a small number of them are not currently working.

A spokesman for Newtown police, Lt. George Sinko, said the officers are generally holding up well.

"A couple of them are taking it harder than some of the other ones," he said. "The things that the officers had to experience underscores the need to support them in every way possible."

Authorities say the victims were shot with a high-powered, military-style rifle loaded with ammunition designed to inflict maximum damage. All the victims had been shot at least twice, the medical examiner said, and as many as 11 times. Two victims were pronounced dead at a hospital, while all others died in the school.

In the past, advocates have pushed to change the statutes on workers' compensation, which currently include provisions for officers who suffer mental impairment as the result of using or being subjected to deadly force ? but not for those who witness crime scenes with mass casualties.

Concerns about the potential cost to cities and towns have been an obstacle, but the issue is likely to resurface in the next legislation session, said state Rep. Stephen Dargan, a West Haven Democrat who is co-chairman of the legislature's public safety committee.

"We don't want it to be used in an abusive way, but the circumstances are so horrific in Newtown. We need to protect those first responders and give them all the help we can give them," he said.

Officials with the town's insurer, the Connecticut Interlocal Risk Management Agency, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Firefighters who responded to the scene at Sandy Hook also have described struggling with feelings of frustration and anguish, but said they were grateful they were spared from witnessing the scene that greeted police inside the school.

Brown said outside agencies have been meeting demands for counseling services, but it will be important to ensure support is in place over the long term. The officers who are not working also could use up available sick time by early January, he said.

"The emotional loads they're carrying far exceed anything they could imagine," Brown said.

Police have yet to offer a possible motive for gunman Adam Lanza's rampage.

Expansive memorials throughout the small New England town have become gathering points for residents and visitors alike. A steady stream of well-wishers have taken pictures, dropped off toys and fought back tears at a huge sidewalk memorial in the center of Newtown's Sandy Hook section that is filled with stuffed animals, poems, flowers, posters and cards.

Newtown officials plan to convert into a memorial the countless mementos paying tribute to the schoolhouse victims. Thousands of flowers, letters, signs, photos, candles, teddy bears and other items at sites around town will be turned into soil and blocks to be used in a memorial, The News Times in nearby Danbury reported.

Netflix suffers Christmas Eve outage, points to Amazon

14 hrs.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - An outage at one of Amazon's Web service centers hit users of Netflix Inc.'s streaming video service on Christmas Eve and was not fully resolved until Christmas day, a spokesman for the movie rental company said on Tuesday.?

The outage impacted Netflix subscribers across Canada, Latin America and the United States, and affected various devices that enable users to stream movies and television shows from home, Netflix spokesman Joris Evers said. Such devices range from gaming consoles such as Nintendo Wii and PlayStation 3 to Blu-ray players.?

Evers said that the issue was the result of an outage at an Amazon Web Services' cloud computing center in Virginia, and started at about 12:30 p.m. PST (2030 GMT) on Monday and was fully restored Tuesday morning, although streaming was available for most users late on Monday.?

"We are investigating exactly what happened and how it could have been prevented," Evers said.?

"We are happy that people opening gifts of Netflix or Netflix-capable devices can watch TV shows and movies and apologize for any inconvenience caused last night," he added.

An outage at Amazon Web Services, or AWS, knocked out such sites as Reddit and Foursquare in April of last year.?

Amazon Web Services was not immediately available for comment. Evers, the Netflix spokesman, declined to comment on the company's contracts with Amazon.
