Small Business Advertisers Like Facebook's Immediacy, But Not Its ...

A few days before Facebook?s IPO, General Motors pulled all its advertising from the platform, charging that it didn?t work. At a conference in New York this week, execs from online eyewear retailer Warby Parker and luxe retailer Gilt Groupe voiced the same sentiment, charging that Facebook doesn?t provide an atmosphere that?s conducive to sales.

Not everyone is down on Facebook, though. Denise Sirovatka says she is pretty happy with the platform.

Since 2009, Sirovatka has been able to amass 900,000 fans for Udi?s Gluten-Free Foods. Creating such a following would be impossible without Facebook, she acknowledges. ?We cater to only one in 100 people,? she says. ?So we decided to build a community on Facebook to bring these people together. We took away the geographic boundaries.?

Udi?s is one of 7 million businesses with an active Facebook Page. Facebook doesn?t break out stats for small business advertisers vs. blue-chip brands, but the company is putting more emphasis on such advertisers. In May, the company named Dan Levy, its former director of finance, to the title of director of small business solutions to help target the estimated 27.5 million small businesses in the U.S.

Udi?s claims to get a fourfold return on investment for its Facebook ad spend and has seen a 30% redemption rate for product samples distributed via a Facebook app that it promoted with Facebook ads. But Sirovatka isn?t completely satisfied with Facebook. ?I think there are some holes in the metrics,? she says. Chief among those: There?s no way to measure real-time activity or to distinguish that the people who were engaging with the Page the day before aren?t the same ones engaging with the Page the next day. ?If there?s a 20% engagement number, but it?s always the same 20%, then that?s a false number,? she says.

Despite enjoying $500,000 in incremental sales over the past year directly attributable to Facebook, Mehdi Farsi, co-founder of State Bicycle, echoed her complaint. ?Facebook still has a long way to go to compete with Google?s pay-per-click,? Farsi says, referring to both companies? analytics. Farsi says Facebook provides some data, but linking the activity to actual sales is a ?vague correlation.?

Both Farsi and Sirovatka also expressed frustration with Facebook?s automated buying process as well. ?If you want to buy a Sponsored Post, you have three to four budget options ? $200, $500, $1,000,? Farsi says, adding that he?d like to have the option to buy at any rate he chooses.

While Facebook doesn?t have any immediate plans to offer less rigid buying options, the company addressed concerns about its metrics last October. At that time, Facebook rolled out People Talking About This, which cataloged user activity related to a Page, including posting to a Page?s Wall, ?liking,? commenting, sharing a Page post or content on the Page, answering a Question posed to fans, mentioning a Page, ?liking? or sharing a deal, or checking in at at a Place.

However, the quality of data on Facebook still pales in comparison to Google, where you can track a consumer?s journey from a search to clicking through an ad to actually buying a product. Michael Lazerow, CMO of Salesforce.com and founder of Buddy Media, says the Google comparison is unfair. ?Google is the best business model in the history of business models,? he says. Lazerow says Facebook is ?closer to TV in how they?re looking at media.?

Levy, meanwhile, says he?s aware of feedback from marketers like Farsi and Sirovatka. ?We know that small businesses don?t have a whole measurement team like large companies,? he says. ?We?re trying to figure out faster ways to help them.? While Levy says there?s no way to identify new engaged users vs. old engaged users, he says linking Facebook marketing to sales can be done by providing a ?whisper code? to fans can relay in-store to show they?ve seen a Facebook ad. Levy says Facebook Offers ? which let consumers cash in on deals they see on Facebook ? also offers strong ROI tracking.

Marketers often find other crafty ways to track ROI. Patrick Ford, VP of Ford?s Gourmet Foods, which is known for its Bone Suckin? Sauces, says he runs campaigns in different cities to see if there?s any effect on sales. Ford also says he recently found the best proof of ROI possible: A customer photographed himself buying 16 bottles of the sauce after being directed to a retailer in Tampa, Fla., carrying the product.

In the near future, there will be other options. As of early September, large advertisers on Facebook can sync their customers? email addresses to Facebook users. For instance, if you give Ford your Gmail address and link that address to your Facebook account, then Ford can hit you with personalized Facebook advertising that reflects your place in the buying cycle. If you just bought a car, the ads will be maintenance reminders rather than pitches to buy new cars. Soon, small businesses will have the same tools, Levy says, perhaps making their Facebook advertising more CRM-focused than CTR-focused.

Offers and other new products, like Gifts, will also provide a better way to track ROI. Lazerow says Facebook is still very much a work in progress. ?They?re only seven years into it and really only four years of monetization,? he says. ?Just because you can?t provide the ROI like [you can with] search doesn?t mean you won?t.?

Qatar Airways flight to Nigeria declares emergency

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) ? Nigerian aviation officials say a Qatar Airways flight from Doha to Lagos will need to make an emergency landing because it has problems with its landing gear.

Harold Demuren, director-general of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, told The Associated Press that the flight Saturday declared an emergency prior to its arrival to Lagos. Demuren said firefighting equipment and personnel were standing by for the arrival of Flight No. QR592 at Lagos' Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

Officals with Qatar Airways could not be immediately reached for comment. The company's website showed the Airbus A330-300 aircraft had an estimated arrival time of 1 p.m. local time (1200 GMT).

Authentic Vegetarian Recipes | Indian Traditional Food | Step-by ...

Mung beans are? full of protein.? They can be cooked in several ways. ? For this recipe, I soaked them overnight and then left them covered in a warm place so that they start?sprouting.? ?Making the curry is very?similar?to cooking the simple mung bean curry.

Ingredients (for 3-4 servings):

2 cups of sprouted mung beans
2 tablespoons oil ( I used sunflower oil)
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
2 small pieces of cinnamon sticks
2 or 3 cloves
1 or 2 small dry red chillies (optional)
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon turmeric
1 teaspoon chilly powder
2 green chillies sliced through the middle ( if you like hot food!)
1 teaspoon crushed ginger
3-4 cloves of?crushed?garlic
1 tablespoon sugar or jaggery
1 tablespoon lemon juice (can use more if you like sweet and sour taste)
2 cups of crushed tomatoes. Fresh tomatoes can be used but would need to be softened a bit before adding.
a few curry leaves and a small bunch of coriandar

Method

1. To sprout the beans, wash the mung beans and allow them to soak overnight. ?The next morning, remove all the water and keep the beans covered in a warm place. ?I tend to keep these in a see through jug or bottle covered with a dark plastic bag. ?Keep these overnight and they should have?started to?sprout. ?In cold countries, you may have to leave them for half a day more to sprout.?Once?sprouted, wash the mung beans and use in curries or salad. Any extra beans can be frozen to use next time.
2.? Add a litre of water to the mug and boil them until they soften and split - I used a pressure cooker and cooked them for 40 minutes on a medium heat. ?Some people like their mung beans ?runny and can add more water.? I prefer mine to be thick so don't add too much water to them whilst cooking them.? Also, it's always easier to add water to the mug as it is cooking so start off with just a litre of water. Whilst the mung beans are cooking, prepare the spices etc:

3.?? Blend the tomatoes in a bowl.

4.?? Add the tomato puri, salt, turmeric, chilly powder, sugar, lemon juice, the green chillies, crushed ginger, crushed garlic and coriander and curry leaves to the tomatoes and mix well.

5.?? Once the mung beans have cooked - prepare the seasoning.

6.?? Pour the oil in a saucepan and let it get hot.

7.? Add in the cinnamon, cloves, the dry red chillies and mustard seeds to the oil.?The mustard seeds and cloves will pop so keep the saucepan covered.

10.? Add the tomato mixture with all the spices to the oil and stir well.? Cook for 3-4 minutes.

10. Now add the cooked mung beans to the tomato mixture and allow it to cook for 10 minutes.? At this stage, you can either cook it further to reduce the water - or add water to the mung - depending on how you like your mung bean gravy.

11.? Sprinkle?coriander?and serve the mung beans hot with rice or chappatis or porathas.

Xi3 goes the crowdfunding route for future X3A, X7A modular PCs

Xi3 has been one of the more inventive PC builders in the field, designing its Modular Computers in the belief that small, more upgradable desktops are the way of the future. The company is planning two new systems to further that dream, the X3A and X7A, but it wants our help: it's running a Kickstarter funding drive until October 28th to assist the development and garner some early adopters. Put down $503 or $603 and you'll get the entry-level X3A, a dual-core 1.65GHz (likely AMD E-450-based) PC with 4GB of RAM, a 32GB SSD and either Linux or Windows installed; splurge with $1,103 or more and you'll get the more performance-driven X7A, which jumps to a quad-core chip with a 3.2GHz peak speed, a Windows-loaded 64GB SSD and faster graphics. Assuming Xi3 makes its target, we should see the X3A and X7A arrive in January and February respectively, with Kickstarter supporters beating the larger herd by a week. Even existing owners are accounted for through a Primary I/O Board upgrade, due before the end of this year, that carries more Ethernet and USB 3.0 ports. Crowdfunding is an unusual approach to buying that next PC, without the certainties of shopping at an online store -- but we're also dealing with an unusual PC from the get-go.

Bioengineers introduce 'Bi-Fi' -- The biological 'Internet'

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? If you were a bacterium, the virus M13 might seem innocuous enough. It insinuates more than it invades, setting up shop like a freeloading houseguest, not a killer. Once inside it makes itself at home, eating your food, texting indiscriminately. Recently, however, bioengineers at Stanford University have given M13 a bit of a makeover.

The researchers, Monica Ortiz, a doctoral candidate in bioengineering, and Drew Endy, PhD, an assistant professor of bioengineering, have parasitized the parasite and harnessed M13's key attributes -- its non-lethality and its ability to package and broadcast arbitrary DNA strands -- to create what might be termed the biological Internet, or "Bi-Fi." Their findings were published online Sept. 7 in the Journal of Biological Engineering.

Using the virus, Ortiz and Endy have created a biological mechanism to send genetic messages from cell to cell. The system greatly increases the complexity and amount of data that can be communicated between cells and could lead to greater control of biological functions within cell communities. The advance could prove a boon to bioengineers looking to create complex, multicellular communities that work in concert to accomplish important biological functions.

Medium and message

M13 is a packager of genetic messages. It reproduces within its host, taking strands of DNA -- strands that engineers can control -- wrapping them up one by one and sending them out encapsulated within proteins produced by M13 that can infect other cells. Once inside the new hosts, they release the packaged DNA message.

The M13-based system is essentially a communication channel. It acts like a wireless Internet connection that enables cells to send or receive messages, but it does not care what secrets the transmitted messages contain.

"Effectively, we've separated the message from the channel. We can now send any DNA message we want to specific cells within a complex microbial community," said Ortiz, the first author of the study.

It is well-known that cells naturally use various mechanisms, including chemicals, to communicate, but such messaging can be extremely limited in both complexity and bandwidth. Simple chemical signals are typically both message and messenger -- two functions that cannot be separated.

"If your network connection is based on sugar then your messages are limited to 'more sugar,' 'less sugar,' or 'no sugar'" explained Endy.

Cells engineered with M13 can be programmed to communicate in much more complex, powerful ways than ever before. The possible messages are limited only by what can be encoded in DNA and thus can include any sort of genetic instruction: start growing, stop growing, come closer, swim away, produce insulin and so forth.

Rates and ranges

In harnessing DNA for cell-cell messaging the researchers have also greatly increased the amount of data they can transmit at any one time. In digital terms, they have increased the bit rate of their system. The largest DNA strand M13 is known to have packaged includes more than 40,000 base pairs. Base pairs, like 1s and 0s in digital encoding, are the basic building blocks of genetic data. Most genetic messages of interest in bioengineering range from several hundred to many thousand base pairs.

Ortiz was even able to broadcast her genetic messages between cells separated by a gelatinous medium at a distance of greater than 7 centimeters.

"That's very long-range communication, cellularly speaking," she said.

Down the road, the biological Internet could lead to biosynthetic factories in which huge masses of microbes collaborate to make more complicated fuels, pharmaceuticals and other useful chemicals. With improvements, the engineers say, their cell-cell communication platform might someday allow more complex three-dimensional programming of cellular systems, including the regeneration of tissue or organs.

"The ability to communicate 'arbitrary' messages is a fundamental leap -- from just a signal-and-response relationship to a true language of interaction," said Radhika Nagpal, professor of computer science at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University, who was not involved in the research. "Orchestrating the cooperation of cells to form artificial tissues, or even artificial organisms is just one possibility. This opens a door to new biological systems and solving problems that have no direct analog in nature."

Ortiz added: "The biological Internet is in its very earliest stages. When the information Internet was first introduced in the 1970s, it would have been hard to imagine the myriad uses it sees today, so there's no telling all the places this new work might lead."

Feast on Vegetarian Mushroom Tacos | The Ravenous Runner

By Caitlin Giddings

Back when I first became a vegetarian, I thought about meat all the time. I missed it. So I pulled the classic rookie-vegetarian move of trying to recapture the magic of my favorite meals through a steady intake of Chik Nuggets, Tofu Pups, and other dubious miracles of modern culinary science. Imitation meat products (well, and ?newly minted vegetarian smugness?) were the staples of my new diet?a lifestyle I later learned goes by the glamorous name of ''junk-food vegetarianism.'' Ah, the folly of herbivorous youth.

Now, after more than 10 years off the meat wagon, I don?t fantasize about meat?or even unhealthy tofu substitutes?at all. I?ve found that some of the ''meatier'' vegetarian meals can be made almost entirely from plants, eliminating the need for overly processed soy.

That?s why I love these mushroom tacos. They have the rich flavor of a slow-cooked pork taco and a satisfying meaty texture. But unlike with pork, mushrooms start out tender and only take about 10 minutes or so on the stove. Plus mushrooms are cholesterol-free, fat-free, full of vitamins, and are rumored to have mystical cancer-fighting properties. It's hard to go wrong when you throw ?cancer-fighting? into the mix.

My partner invented this recipe based on the seasonings that go into Tacos al Pastor. Minus the pineapple and coke, but if you want to experiment with those too, knock yourself out. It's a fast and filling recipe that?s super easy to make for a large crowd.

Mushroom Tacos
Recipe feeds 2-3 runners
Time needed: 30-45 minutes

What you?ll need:
Pound of scrubbed assorted mushrooms (creminis and portabellos work well)
1 yellow onion
2 cloves garlic
6 small corn tortillas
1 orange
1 lime
1 teaspoon cumin
2 teaspoons dark chili powder
1 teaspoon oregano
3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
Salt to taste
Cilantro

How to make it:
1. Dice up one onion, setting aside three tablespoons for onion topping. Cut mushrooms into large chunks.
2. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium high-heat. Add onions and mushrooms and saut? for about 10 minutes until onions are tender and mushrooms begin to brown.
3. Mince garlic. Juice orange and lime. Reserve two wedges of lime.
4. Add garlic, cumin, oregano, and chili powder to onions and mushroom.
5. Saute for 30 seconds until garlic is aromatic, then add orange and lime juice, along with about a teaspoon of salt.
6. Cook for two to three minutes until the juice reduces.
7. Heat tortillas individually in a dry pan on the stove or all together wrapped in a towel in the microwave.
8. Spoon mushroom mix into tortillas and garnish with reserved raw onion and chopped cilantro. Enjoy!

Your Virtual Assistant

Your Virtual AssistantMichelle Mangen applies her knowledge of accounting, social media, and payroll to help small business owners be more productive through her firm,?Your Virtual Assistant. Mangen is based in Florida, but services clients all over the country. ?She specializes in WordPress services, QuickBooks, social media management, administration services, and Excel spreadsheet creation. She strives to help business owners get more hours in the day by delegating tasks she can assist with:

Small Business Trends:?What?s your top tip for small business owners today?

Michelle Mangen:?My top tip would be that we have to stay current in our industry in order to remain knowledgeable and competitive. Maybe this means taking some classes, reading certain material, etc. Building relationships is also important as well, especially if you are a solo-preneur.

Small Business Trends:?If you were stuck on a desert island?with?Internet, what would be the single app or website you couldn?t live without?

Michelle Mangen:?For me that would be Basecamp. Since most of the tasks I receive from clients are through email it?s important for me to have some system that makes it easy to record items that need follow up. Basecamp allows me to assign tasks out to other team members and the threaded conversations makes it easy to keep everything together (and tidy).

Small Business Trends:?What role does social media play in marketing your business?

Michelle Mangen:?Both very little and a lot. Twitter has always been my favorite social network and the one I spend the most time on. I don?t really ?market? my business per se but have gotten the majority of my client base as a direct result of a relationship that developed on Twitter. I?ve never been the self-promotion type (it makes me uncomfortable) which is why I really don?t do any marketing. I?ve also been incredibly blessed with ?word of mouth? referrals.

Hawkeye ManagementHawkeye Management?provides lines of credit to small businesses of $50,000 to $100,000 or more. The company prides itself on its track record: to date, 70% of the business owners who apply for unsecured business credit through Hawkeye have been approved. With an industry average of only 10%, Hawkeye stands out in its ability to connect business owners with the right lenders. ?Tom Gazaway, President and CEO of Hawkeye Management, shares his insights:

Small Business Trends:?What?s one thing you never skimp on in your business?

Tom Gazaway:?Our brand. Don?t have a crappy logo, don?t put out bad content, don?t have bad business cards or a bad website.? Do it right or don?t do it.? There are a lot of things we may be ready for, but we won?t do it if we can?t do it well.? That doesn?t mean you won?t make mistakes, but shoot for perfection and settle for excellence.

Small Business Trends:?What role does social media play in marketing your business?

Tom Gazaway:?It?s integral.? We use tools like Hubspot, TweetDeck and Vocus to make our social media efforts more effective, efficient and measurable but you?re not a pioneer if you get on Twitter.? You?re a dinosaur if you?re not there.

Small Business Trends:?If you could have one small biz superhero power, what would it be?

Tom Gazaway:?I?m rarely and probably never the most talented, most gifted, or smartest guy in any audience but I have an unquenchable thirst to be better, grow our brand, and shake up the market. ?So passion can make up for a lot of things.

Research Access

Research AccessFor those with a passion for research,?Research Access?is the blog to read. It?s the effort of?Survey Analytics, which offers an enterprise grade research platform for collecting feedback to enable businesses, governments and consumers to participate and learn from each other. This blog, however, focuses on helping business people who are tasked with marketing research and includes videos, podcasts, and how-to posts on surveys, data tools, and analysis. ?Dana Stanley, VP of Marketing for Survey Analytics, answers our questions:
Small Business Trends: What?s your top tip for small business owners today?

Dana Stanley:?You may think market research is out of your budget, but technology has made it easier than ever to affordably get market feedback before making major business decisions. It can be inexpensive to do online surveys and get feedback on your products and services prior to investing your money and time in launching them. A small investment in research can pay off big.

Small Business Trends: If you were stuck on a desert island?with?internet, what would be the single app or website you couldn?t live without?

Dana Stanley:?Market researchers love information, so I?m going to have to go with Wikipedia. Not only does it have a shocking level of detail, it?s also updated seemingly to the minute on current events.

Small Business Trends:?If you could have one small biz superhero power, what would it be?

Dana Stanley:?As market researchers we?re obsessed with understanding the way customers think. So my small biz superhero power would be having the ability to read minds.

Asia stocks up after Spain pledges to cut spending

BANGKOK (AP) ? Asian stock markets rose Friday after Spain announced severe budget cuts meant to show international lenders and investors that the country is taking steps toward getting its debt under control.

The Spanish government on Thursday unveiled a draft budget for 2013 that cuts overall spending by ?40 billion ($51 billion). Wall Street spurted higher on the news. Many economists see the cost-cutting as a signal Spain is preparing to request financial aid from other governments and the European Central Bank.

Spain, whose banks have been hobbled by toxic assets, has so far been reluctant to ask for help because of the requirements that will likely be imposed in exchange for any aid.

Stocks were also helped by speculation that China's central bank will act soon to help the world's No. 2 economy.

Lorraine Tan, director at Standard & Poor's equity research in Singapore, said she believes the Chinese government is likely to introduce incentives to encourage domestic spending rather than making more money available for loans, as the U.S. Federal Reserve has done under its quantitative easing programs.

"Banks are indicating that they are not finding takers for loans," Tan said.

"The Chinese have a lot of flexibility ... the question is, they will only act on it if they think it will achieve something."

Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index rose 0.4 percent to 20,836.06. South Korea's Kospi added nearly 0.2 percent to 1,992.12 and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.2 percent to 4,394.10. Benchmarks in Singapore, Taiwan, mainland China, Thailand and the Philippines also rose.

But Japan's Nikkei 225 index lost 0.8 percent to 8,876.77, sinking on a government report that showed industrial production fell a further 1.3 percent in August. Weak global and domestic demand is weighing on manufacturers, particularly electronics makers, who are facing intense competition from South Korean, Taiwanese and other Asian manufacturers.

The strong yen, which erodes overseas earnings and makes Japanese-made products relatively more expensive, is also eating into profits.

Major Japanese exporters got slammed. Toyota Motor Corp. fell 2.3 percent and Honda Motor Co. shed 2.7 percent. Ricoh Co. slid 3 percent.

Rising gold prices helped related shares. Hong Kong-listed Zijin Mining Co., China's largest gold miner, gained 2 percent. Australia's Newcrest Mining Ltd. jumped 3.8 percent.

Spain's budget announcement propelled Wall Street stocks to their first gain of the week, despite mixed data on the U.S. economy.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 0.5 percent to 13,485.97. The S&P 500 index rose 1 percent to 1,447.15. The Nasdaq composite index rose 1.4 percent to 3,136.60.

The U.S. government said the overall economy grew at a slower annual rate in the April-through-June quarter than it previously estimated. Companies cut orders for durable goods last month. But the number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits fell.

Benchmark oil for November delivery was up 49 cents to $92.34 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $1.87 to finish at $91.85 on the Nymex on Thursday.

In currencies, the euro rose to $1.2932 from $1.2917 late Thursday in New York. The dollar fell to 77.50 yen from 77.62 yen.

(AP) ? R.A. Dickey was so close yet so far from 20 wins, faltering from fatigue and fuming he had failed to seize the moment.

"About the fourth or fifth inning I felt exasperated. I was not myself today for the most part," he said.

"And then I'd come out for an at-bat and I would hear this kind of growing surge, and it really was neat. I mean I don't know if I've ever experienced something like that before. Maybe I never will again. Although I wasn't distracted from the moment, how could you not be motivated to go out there and give the fans and, well, your teammates and yourself all that you have?" he said.

Absorbing the energy from 31,506 fans at the final home game of another sorry Mets season, Dickey summoned his strength and concentration. David Wright boosted him into the lead with a tiebreaking three-run homer, and Dickey led New York over Pittsburgh Pirates 6-5 Thursday to become the first knuckleballer in more than three decades to win 20 games.

"It's like a big exhale," Dickey said.

Throwing his hard knuckler at up to 78 mph, Dickey (20-6) allowed three runs and eight hits in 7 2-3 innings, tying his career high with 13 strikeouts and walking two.

With New York winding up its fourth straight losing season, he capped a trinity of highlights that began with the first Mets no-hitter by Johan Santana in June and continued with Wright setting the team career hits record on Wednesday.

"This was about R.A. today," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "It was about him. It was about his connection with the fans, the connection with the city. And so I said use that."

Quite a turnaround from 2010, when Dickey began the season at Triple-A Buffalo and had to prove he belonged in the majors. And from last year, when he was 8-13.

The 37-year-old had never won more than 11 games in any previous season is just 61-56 in his big league career.

"I was the picture of mediocrity by my own admission," he said.

But in the late stages of his career, he has mastered the knuckler ? a pitch that has flummoxed most of those who have tried and must survive on fastballs.

"I think everybody here today would have taken one swing where they thought they were going to crush one and they swung right throw it," Pirates outfielder Travis Snider said.

Dickey had never set a numerical goal for his pitching.

"It's just much more for me if I can really harness the moment and suck the marrow out of every second, then I've done what I want to do and I can be satisfied," he said.

Dickey became the first 20-game winner for the pitching-proud Mets since Frank Viola in 1990 and the first knuckleballer to accomplish the feat since Houston's Joe Niekro in 1980, according to STATS LLC. Viola also reached 20 with a win over the Pirates.

New York had altered its rotation, giving Dickey a chance to win 20 at home. The fans gave Dickey his first ovation when he walked to the bullpen to warm up. He waved his cap as they applauded when he walked off after his 128th and final pitch ? his most in eight years ? and got a final round of applause when he returned to the field for a postgame interview that was broadcast over the stadium sound system.

"Growing up, you just want to compete. And once you have the weaponry to compete, you want to be really good," he said. "And then when you're really good, you want to be supernaturally good. And I think for me there's been this steady kind of metamorphosis from just surviving to being a craftsman. Ultimately the hope is to be an artist with what you do."

The milestone following two life-changing events. He authored a book last spring, "Wherever I Wind Up," revealing he was a sexual abuse victim when he was 8. And he climbed Mount Kilimanjaro to raise awareness for the Bombay Teen Challenge.

"When you get to a comfort level about who you are and you don't have secrets and you feel the freedom to be who you feel like you're called to be, that's something," Dickey said. "Is this the result of the cathartic experience of writing the book, I don't know. I'm going to say this, it certainly hasn't hurt. And to be comfortable in your own skin, which I was not for so long in my life, there's something to that."

His memorable year began with a climb to the 19,341-foot Uhuru Peak of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

"He was taking his career and putting it in jeopardy, putting it in harm's way," Collins said. "You don't know what's going to happen. But it wasn't about him. It has never been about him."

Dickey joined Washington's Gio Gonzalez (20-8) as the top winners in the majors. They figure to duel for the NL Cy Young Award.

Dickey fell behind 2-0 and 3-1 and overcame an outstanding, climbing catch by Snider more than 2 feet above the right-field wall that robbed Mike Baxter of a tying home run in the second inning.

Former Texas teammate Rod Barajas hit an opposite-field RBI double that hopped the right-field wall in the second, and Jordy Mercer following with a run-scoring infield single.

Ike Davis led off the bottom half with his 31st homer, but Barajas boosted the lead to 3-1 when he homered on an 0-2 pitch in the fourth, a drive over the old 16-foot wall in left. Kevin Correia (11-11) gave up Scott Hairston's RBI single in the fourth and Murphy's tying single in the fifth before Wright hit an opposite-field drive to right for his 21st home run this season and a 6-3 lead.

Dickey was watching on TV in the clubhouse at the time.

"There were times he picked us up and really carried us as a team on his back," said Wright, happy to provide the hit that made the difference.

Dickey said after the seventh inning he was "pooped," but Collins sent him out for the eighth.

"I said, look, this ballpark is filled with energy today. Use it to your advantage," the manager recalled. "These people deserve to see you walk off the mound."

Responded Dickey: "Don't leave me hanging."

Jon Rauch, pitching on his 34th birthday, came in after a two-out walk, finished the eighth and allowed Alex Presley's two-run homer in the nervy ninth. Bobby Parnell retired Josh Harrison on a groundout and Jose Tabata on a flyout for his fifth save.

Dickey came back on the field for handshakes and soaked in the fans' love.

"I feel it in my face. I don't know if that makes any sense," Dickey said. "I want to get emotional. It's hard because we've had the type of season that we've had."

His family stayed back in Nashville, Tenn. ? the kids are in school ? but planned to meet him in Atlanta on Thursday night for the start of the Mets' final trip. He had some close friends at the game.

Through all the tough times, Dickey pictured this type of success in his mind.

"I never abandoned hope. I always held that out," he said. "My hope always outweighed my doubt, and that's what kind of kept me going."

NOTES: Pittsburgh, which led the NL Central at the All-Star break, lost for the 20th time in 26 games and dropped to 76-80. ... Snider gave the Pirates a memory with one of the best defensive plays of the season. He dug his cleats into the chain-link fence, hooked his left arm on top of the wall in front of the Mo's Zone seats, hoisted himself up and grabbed Baxter's drive in the webbing of the glove on his right hand well about the 8-foot wall. ... Andrew McCutchen bruised his left knee on a failed attempt at a diving catch on a soft fly to center in the seventh inning. He went 0 for 4, dropping to .332 and giving up the NL batting lead to San Francisco's Buster Posey, who went 2 for 4 and is hitting .333. ... The Mets drew 2,242,803 to Citi Field this year, down from 3.15 million in 2009, 2.56 million in 2010 and 2.35 million last year. Surprise, Chase is refinancing your mortgage - Katie Stout

While millions of struggling homeowners have had to jump through all sorts of hoops trying to refinance their mortgages, some have barely had to lift a finger.?

Qualcomm to release two new budget quad-core S4 chips

Qualcomm

Qualcomm has announced that two new Snapdragon S4s are on the way, with both touting quad-core CPUs with a budget-friendly price. The MSM8225Q and MSM8625Q both build on the S4 design, complete with support for LPDDR2 memory, Wifi, Bluetooth 4.0 and FM connectivity using the Qualcomm Atheros AR6005 and WCN2243 chips.

The major difference between the two chips is that the Snapdragon S4 Play MSM8625Q features Qualcomm's integrated multimode UMTS/CDMA modem, and the MSM8225Q has an integrated UMTS modem. In layman's speak -- the MSM8625Q will work on Verizon and Sprint. The real difference, and likely where the cost cutting comes into play, is in the GPU. Snapdragon "Pro" models feature a stronger graphics processor, though the exact model in tonight's new chips hasn't been disclosed.

If you're a hardware nerd, the long version is in the press release after the break. If you're not, just know that Qualcomm is making a slightly cheaper, yet still high-end quad-core CPU to power the next generation of mid-level handsets. It's good news all around.

La Jolla Cove - Sport & Recreation Photos - A LEFT-EYED VIEW

Posted by Steven (Chicagoland, United States) on 25 September 2012 in Sport & Recreation and Portfolio.

La Jolla Cove is a cove and a beach in La Jolla, San Diego, California. It is a very small beach within walking distance from the Children's Pool Beach. Scripps Park, a grassy area commonly used for picnicking, is located on the bluffs above the beach.

La Jolla Cove is popular for swimming, scuba diving and snorkeling. However, since La Jolla Cove is within the San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park (a marine refuge area), swimming devices such as surfboards, boogie boards, and even inflatable mattresses are not permitted, and this rule is carefully enforced by the lifeguards, specifically in the part of the area defined as the Ecological Reserve.

The La Jolla Cove is home to the annual La Jolla Cove Rough Water swim. This is one of the oldest ocean swims in the world.

No fishing or collecting of marine invertebrates, (even taking dead specimens or seashells) is allowed. All sea animals in this area are protected by law, including the orange Garibaldi fish, which are unusually common in the Cove.

Matt Barkley has slipped back into the pack and Montee Ball has fallen off the board completely. Landry Jones? You can probably take him off the list, too. Same with Tyler Wilson.

All the preseason hype is pretty much out the window. The Heisman Trophy race starts now and it's about results, not hype.

Barkley could still climb back into the race, he's got the talent and the platform (games against Oregon and Notre Dame) to do so. Here are six players he'll be competing with from here on out (in no particular order).

___

EJ MANUEL, qb, Florida State ? One of the main requirements of any Heisman winner is to have a big game in at least one of your biggest games. Manuel has already checked that box, carving up Clemson for 380 yards passing and 102 rushing. The Tigers' defense won't be mistaken for Alabama's, but Manuel came through when his team was in a hole and that counts for something, too. The Seminoles will be big favorites against the rest of the ACC, which means one misstep could be too many for Manuel's Heisman campaign. Key games: at Virginia Tech, Nov. 8; vs. Florida, Nov. 24.

___

GENO SMITH, qb, West Virginia ? His numbers are already off the charts. In three games, he has 1,072 yards and 12 touchdowns. The Mountaineers begin Big 12 play this week against Baylor, so expect the big numbers to continue piling up. In fact, the Big 12 should provide plenty of opportunities for Smith to put up flashy stats. Key games: at Texas, Oct. 6; vs. Oklahoma, Nov. 17.

___

MANTI TE'O, lb, Notre Dame ? A linebacker for Heisman? It's never happened before, but Te'o has been spectacular the last two weeks on national television, while dealing with personal tragedy. And he plays for Notre Dame, which doesn't hurt. If the Fighting Irish can stay unbeaten, it'll be on their defense. Te'o is the face of that defense ? and its heart and soul. Key games: vs. Stanford, Oct. 13; at Oklahoma, Oct. 27; at USC, Nov. 24.

___

JARVIS JONES, lb, Georgia ? If Te'o makes the list, no reason for Jones not to. He was thoroughly dominant against Missouri and as a pass rusher he'll have be able to toss around those sack stats, which are far more appealing than plain old tackles. The All-American has 4.5 sacks in three games. Key games: at South Carolina, Oct. 6; vs. Florida, Oct. 27.

____

AJ McCARRON, qb, Alabama ? McCarron won't be able to compete with guys like Manuel and Smith when it comes to sheer numbers, though the fourth-best passer rating in the country and 10 touchdown passes through four games is nothing to scoff at. Alabama's offense isn't built that way and the Tide look so good right now, who knows how many more fourth quarters McCarron will spend mostly watching from the sideline. Still, he's more than just a game-manager. Key games: at LSU, Nov. 3; possibly the SEC championship, Dec. 1.

___

COLLIN KLEIN, qb, Kansas State ? His passes aren't pretty and his runs aren't flashy, but Optimus Klein is really tough to stop. A humble but tenacious wrecking-ball of a quarterback, he's got just enough Tebow in him to make him a voter favorite. Key games: at West Virginia, Oct. 20; vs. Texas, Dec. 1.
